Arvin, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is located about 35 miles (60 km) northeast of Bakersfield and about 30 miles (48 km) south of Fresno. The name Arvin comes from the Yokuts word "hawa" meaning "place where there is water." In 1879, General George Armstrong Custer and his men were marching through this area on their way to the Midway Crossroads when they came across a friendly Indian village called Hawa'i. After spending some time with the Indians, General Custer named his new settlement after this village - Arvin. At first it was just a local post office called Arvin but it grew quickly into a busy agricultural center due to its rich Placer soil and good irrigation systems. In 1916, Arvin became part of the newly formed Kern County and has been its official location ever since. Today many businesses operate in Arvin including several banks, two insurance companies, one chemical company, six churches and four schools. The economy is based largely on agriculture with a small amount of manufacturing as well as services such as accounting and law enforcement. There are also several ranching operations that produce beef and hay for local Consumption or export purposes.
