Arvin, California is a small town in the far north-central corner of Kern County, California. It is located on the east side of the Kern River, about 20 miles northwest of Bakersfield and 10 miles south-southwest of San Bernardino. The Arvin post office was established in 1912. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,838. The community began as a farming village on the west bank of the Kern River near present day Arvin. The first settler in Arvin was George Wickersham who arrived in 1876 from New York City. He operated a sawmill and farm at what is now known as Wickersham Point on the riverbank where he built a cabin with logs and later raised chickens and pigs. In 1902, Jens Jensen purchased land adjacent to Wickersham Point from Wickersham for $1 per acre (0.50 km2). He laid out his new settlement called Jensenville on 7 acres (2 ha) across from Wickersham's cabin site. By 1907 there were five dwellings; two stores; one hotel; one millinery store; two blacksmiths shops; one cooper shop; four farmers; and six rural laborers employed by Jens Jensen alone or in cooperation with other settlers to cultivate eighteen hundred acres (80 hectares) of land that would become Arvin today. In 1913, when local resident Harry Hahn organized an election to create a board of trustees for his newly founded high school District No. 1, he named Arvin after himself because he "saw no reason why it should not be so named." On November 25th 1915 three citizens - Averil Bruce (1892-1978), John Pritchard (1893-1970) and Harry Hahn (1901-1988) - met at Hahn's home to hammer out agreement on naming the new high school district after individuals who had helped make Arvin what it is today: Mrs Averil Bruce chaired Election Committee which recommended that “Arvin’’ be used as the name for High School District 1 – following her husband John Pritchard’s donation during their visit to our town earlier this year." The Board approved this name change unanimously on December 5th 1915 With only 3 students enrolled for PreKindergarten through 8th Grade in 1916 due largely to World War I shortages,[4] Mrs Bruce organized an extra class into 9th grade which met every other weeknight until classes opened Friday morning due primarily to lack of space at Our Lady Of Peace High School across Railroad Avenue between 1914-16[5]. This 9th grade class became known as “The Troubadour Girls” because they sang religious hymns throughout our long winter months before finally graduating in May 1916 with metal detectors still being used back then![6] Mrs Bruce also spearheaded fundraising efforts which resulted in enough money being raised by February 1917[7], providing all necessary equipment including desks, chalk boards and overhead projector rental[8], uniforms for all girls including white lab coats,[9],[10] books onto hoes while working outside during those early days outdoors! Together we created what we know today as Our Lady Of Peace Middle School! For many years MrsBruce served as Director Of Schools For District 1 & continues this role currently!
