Arvin, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is located adjacent to Bakersfield and just east of the Kern River. The first Europeans to visit Arvin were Mormon missionaries in 1847. The community was founded by George H. Smith in 1907 on land donated by his brother-in-law, John Cisneros. Arvin Post Office opened on July 10, 1907. The eastern side of Arvin is built up with businesses that produce agricultural goods such as fertilizer and hay; while the western side has more residences which include many single family homes and apartments from the 1960s through 2000s boom era when Arvin became one of the most popular places to live in Kern County for young professionals and their families. In 1974, a fire destroyed part of a large cotton gin operation near Arvin which had been operated by William Drysdale since 1875. The loss caused some people to question whether or not this industrial area could support another industry if it developed thereabouts because it would take away other jobs that people were used to seeing around town (e.g., agriculture). However, over time new industries have arisen such as plastics production and light manufacturing companies that are based in nearby Bakersfield or Claremont townships within Kern County but use facilities located in or close to Arvin due its proximity to production plants and markets

Arvin (formerly Arvin, California) is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and its elevation is 653 feet (183 m). The first Europeans to visit what is now Arvin were Spanish soldiers who established a mission there in 1777. The mission was abandoned by 1820 and Arvin became an agricultural settlement with a few buildings erected from 1827 to 1830. A post office was established at Arvin in 1837. In 1860, Wm Henson sold 640 acres (250 ha) of land east of town to John C. Fremont for $1,000 (). The town of Arvin began operations under the name Fremont on November 3, 1860. In 1872-73 County Superintendent James Steuart built a sawmill and gristmill at present day Post Road/State Route 33 near modern day Lodi. This mill produced flour for local grocery stores and also exported flour to Sacramento and other markets. With increased trade came increased population which led to the erection of more buildings until by 1880 only about 30 small businesses remained in town with no major industry whatsoever . In 1902-1903 the county acquired 1,500 acres (500 ha) of forestlands east of town for public use as part of Project Agriculture which aimed to increase production through land acquisition . Many new homes were built during this time period but most importantly schools were constructed including one named after Governor George Armstrong Cupp . The Great Depression hit Arvin hard as jobs dried up and prices fell; however business revived somewhat when farming became more efficient using irrigation systems which contributed significantly to growth following World War II . After years of development there have been relatively few changes since 1920s when much like many places across America farmland passed away leaving very littleurbans or open space; however recent investments including high speed internet access has made downtown areas more vibrant while preserving some older buildings
