Air Force gift history in Atascadero, California began with the establishment of the United States Air Force Academy in September 1947. The Academy was established to provide a groomed and disciplined cadre of young men for service in the USAF. In 1951, General Curtis LeMay became Commander-in-Chief of the USAF and directed that gifts from America's friends be given to the Academy. One such gift was a Boeing 707 airplane which flew into Atascadero Municipal Airport on May 20, 1951 as part of an airlift for General LeMay's initial inspection tour of duty with the USAF. A plaque located at the airport honors this event. In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated Atascadero Municipal Airport as one of three primary airstrips used by USAF Units stationed in California (the others being Las Vegas and Roswell). The first use of runway 08/26 was on July 5th when an F-86E fighter squadron flown by Colonel Robert Humes landed at basecamp after their mission over Nevada during Operation Piñata. With its long north-south runway and short east-west runway, Atascaderoad had been ideal for training aerial gunnery students; within two years it would become home to Air National Guard unit 123rd Fighter Wing Station Laughlin AFB AZ (Fighter Command Base Eustis AFB FL) providing jet combat support operations against known enemy threats within Orange County airspace. The six purpose built Hangar "A" structures were completed in 1961 housing fighters and bombers from all over America including Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft operated by Naval Surface Group Atlantic Fleet out of NAS Miramar CA; Douglas DC-6 cargo planes operated by Marine Corps Aircraft Landing Ground El Segundo CA/Naval Air Station Miramar; North American SNJ2H transport planes operated by Republic Aviation RC-6s at San Diego AB; Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters based at NAS Whidbey Island WA operating off shore patrols flying out to sea from NAS Long Beach CA while KC135 Stratotankers provided medical evacuation cover during earthquakes or other emergencies along coastal areas throughout Southern California On December 15th 1956, Jack Mantle organized what would become known as "The Great Western Swing", an international show sponsored by Pan American World Airways which took place near Stockton CA between October 10th - 12th 1956 featuring acts like Buddy Holly and Joe Bonamassa amongst others. One night during this period hangar No 2 at adjacent San Bernardino Army Depot produced world Famous rock band The Beatles performing before an estimated 100000 people attending a military installation just outside Los Angeles! Some say this show signaled beginning of end for US War effort with respect to hippies who were living openly among servicemen & women across Southern California despite government crackdowns? It is also speculated that McGuire Gardens may have hosted some secret government meetings related to space programs taken place there? In 1960, the air force additions to Atascadero were completed when they constructed a large annex to provide more space for planes and then in 1966, they built an additional runway which allowed jets to take off and land more easily. The base has been continuously maintained by the air force ever since it was first established. Today, Atascadero is home to both fighter jets and bombers as well as various other military equipment.

Atascadero is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monterey Peninsula region. Atascadero's history began with Mission San Miguel Arcángel and itsCatholic church, which was completed in 1797. In 1821, Atascadero became part of Mexico City until it was annexed by the United States in 1848. The gold rush that followed brought many people to Atascadero during this time and it grew quickly as a result of its location on the eastern edge of California's central coast. By 1870, Atascadero had become one of the most important mining towns in California because of its relative abundance of gold and silver ore. In 1911, after years of growth and development, AtascadEROdeployed its first schoolteacher when Dr. John Blyth arrived from Portland Oregon to teach fifth grade at Our Lady's Academy (now Marymount College). Dr. Blyth would later serve as President and CEO of Pacific Data Systems from 1991-2003 before retiring due to health issues in 2007. After his retirement, he donated his entire estate to Marymount College for use as an education center called "Blyth House." The economy suffered during World War II due to rationing but rebounded following the war thanks to increased production from defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation and other businesses that relocated to Atascadoro during that time period such as IBM Ballantine Laboratories and Motorola Electronics Company (later Alcatel-Lucent). However, due to regional economic downturns starting in the early 2000s and continuing through today, Atascadoro has experienced significant declines over the past several decades including population (-20% since 2000), employment (-30%), poverty (-60%), crime (-50%), schools - all negative except for single digits since 1990 while home values have more than doubled over that time frame (from $100K in 1990 to $250K now). In recent years there has been a renewed focus on revitalization efforts including strategies like arts + culture programming; restoration/updating infrastructure; developing new business opportunities; creating new parks or open space; bringing attention to historic properties nearby such as Mission San Miguel Arcángel State Historic Park or Mount Pinos park adjacent thereto; initiating community engagement projects like block parties or Days Without Culture events where citizens are invited into local restaurants for food sampling or cultural events throughout the day.; etc... These initiatives have helped bring some temporary respite back into town but continue what has been an overall decline over these decades characterized by high levels of unemployment rates amongst residents along with increasing amount spent on government services instead of private sector investments which could lead To increased economic opportunity while also reducing poverty rates among locals
