Atascadero is a small city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is adjacent to Monterey Bay. The population was 31,819 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is one of two cities in San Luis Obispo County that are both incorporated as villages. The other city is Salinas. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770. Juan Bautista de Anza led a group of men from Monterey up the Santa Cruz River valley to reach AtascadERO by way of an old trail that crossed the mountains between these two towns on July 1, 1771. This event has been called "the beginning of Californication." In 1821, gold was discovered near Atascadero and soon thereafter settlers began arriving here en masse. By 1848 there were over 100 residents living in this town; today it has only about 30 residents remaining who all reside within its boundaries. The first school in Atascadero was built in 1868 by Reverend John Sutter and his wife Eliza Jane Sutter as part of their missionary work in what would eventually become California. A new school building was completed and dedicated on November 10, 1870 by Governor Manuel Nieto following complaints made by local citizens about inadequate education available for their children in nearby Salinas – which at that time had a population of 2,500 people and also enjoyed excellent educational opportunities thanks to its location on top of Nob Hill (located just outside Oficina del Pueblo). A post office was established at Atascadero on November 14, 1870 under the name Animas Valley with mail sent from Salinas via Stagecoach Road until 1907 when rail service arrived making postal services much more reliable for locals and beyond; however due to high postage rates received from letters sent from Ascalon Springs he renamed it “Atascadero” effective October 7th 1907 while still keeping use of “ Animas Valley Post Office” signage until discontinued completely on July 15th 1912 due to budget restraints which forced closure/merging with neighboring village SoledADO after over 100 years! In 1916 during World War I local WWII veteran Tom Watson set up shop here working repairing bicycles for sale out back before setting up his own business four years later doing so until his death suddenly early morning hours Sunday September 25th 1951 age 56 leaving behind an unfinished business he had started many years earlier but never quite executed due largely to health concerns associated with bicycle repair work! A heartwarming story indeed illustrating just how Cycle Horse Repair Shop continued unabated even during difficult times throughout those earliest days following WWII despite regulations prohibiting businesses like these type activities being run asset-based! Atascadero, California is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Atascadero's history begins with Mission San Francisco de Asís (1769-1821), which was built on the banks of the Santa Clara River by Franciscan missionaries. The mission served as the center of a Catholic ecclesiastical province that stretched from Monterey to San Miguel and included Atascadero. In 1824, when General Antonio Loma von Teitelbaum captured Monterey and its environs during the Mexican War of Independence, he destroyed all but one vestige of San Francisco's mission system in what is now downtown Atascadero. A new missions were founded at Carmelita (1827) and Misión Nuestra Señora de la Merced (1829). In 1848, following Mexican annexation of California, Atascadero became part of Alta California under the jurisdiction of Mexicali Province. For most of its history it was administratively separate from other northern Californias because there was no market for its produce or lumber. However, beginning in 1859 it became an incorporated city within Mexicali Province with full voting rights and limited autonomy until 1912 when it adopted its present name after José María Cesárzano Atanasio Hidalgo y Costilla who served as governor from 1911 to 1916. The first post office opened in Atascadero on November 15th 1876; however mail service did not arrive until April 25th 1880 due to a transportation problem caused by geographical factors: “Atascaderos [were] located on two branches—the main branch being about nine miles long while the side branches ran only six miles apart Consequently passengers travelling between these two points had to use Stagecoach Company coaches which sometimes carried up to twenty passengers per coach” As early as 1881 there were plans for extensive citrus production in AtascadERO thanks largely to American entrepreneur César Pacheco who brought over 5 acres (20 hectares) of land and started building a distillery called "Finca La Palma" near modern day Paso Robles Boulevard and State Route 159 just north of town center. On October 16th 1888 Pacheco lost his life during a protest against high water rates along State Route 158 nearpresent day Fillmore Avenue when an estimated crowd numbering 100-300 persons turned out to greet him upon his arrival back home after visiting Doña Ana County.. The cause attribution remains unknown but vandalism likely occurred subsequent regarding his death.. It should be noted that although various business ventures failed due primarily to prohibition laws opposed by many residents prior thereto such as cattle proding operations run by John Blythe - this does not detract from Pacheco's accomplishments otherwise; Despite numerous failures some early success led eventually including founding Oficina de Vigilancia e Higiencia en Comercio exterior de la República Argentina – later renamed Agencia Nacional del Mercado Vegetal– partially responsible for stirring support among agriculturalists behind entry into World War I . . . . plantation operating then consisted predominantly through religious orders with masons doing much construction labor Source: Diego Gutierrez - History Of AtascadERO Town
