AtASCADERO - A CENTURY OF PROGRESS In 1888, early Mexican settlers established permanent homes in what would become known as Atascadero due to their proximity to San Francisco Bay and easy access to water resources. This location not only provided safe harbor for vessels shipping goods out of Vallejo but also made it possible for traders and smugglers to traffic goods through the area undetected by Mexican Authorities. The early pioneers who resided here were hard working individuals who brought new life to what had been an inactive community. They built sturdy homes made from adobe bricks which still stand today along Withch Road near Whatcom High School . Due to their efforts, Atascado’s population rapidly grew from just 100 citizens in 1887 to 4500 by 1913; an impressive milestone given that at that time almost half of all resident households were composed of five or less individuals! Notable members of this community include: Joses Máximo de la Hoz (1847-1924), José del Carmen Herrera (1868-1958), Manuel Cabrera (1860-1944), Antonio Orozco (1862-1945) and Francisco Sánchez Acevedo (1865-1950). In 1821, Mexican General José Joaquín de Herrera decided to establish a military post at Atascadero on the San Joaquin River because of its strategic location and easy access to water supplies. He named the post after his own birthplace, Atacama, Chile. The town began to grow quickly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. It was not until 1837 that formal roads were built connecting Atascadero with other settlements in southern California. By 1840, however, AtascadERO had become an isolated enclave with little interaction with outside society. During World War II, Atascadero served as a vital staging ground for Army troops deployed throughout Southern California. Partly due to its ample water resources and partly due to its strategic location within easy reach of enemy forces,Atascadero remained an important commercial center during much of this time. Large manufacturing plants such as Kaiser Aluminum Company and Ford Motor Company developed here during this period; however, many of these businesses eventually closed or relocated after World War II ended. In recent years, Atascadero has seen a resurgence in popularity as a place enjoyable for both locals and tourists alike.
