Atascadero is one of the most Rancho Santa Fe Mexican settlements in California and its history can be traced back to 1853 when José María Atanasio Bandes led a group of settlers from central Mexico over the Cajon Pass into this newly discovered area. The town was founded on December 12, 1853 by James Waddell and his brother-in-law Lorenzo Tataitlán. The first post office was established in 1854. In 1863, Ayerza Adobe became the first store in Atascadero. In 1865, Pico Alto Creek was dammed for irrigation purposes and created numerous ponds that served as reservoirs for water supply for the town and surrounding agricultural areas. This event also marked the beginning of Atascadero's growth as an agricultural center due to the increased production of fruit trees due to improved irrigation techniques developed by Hiram Hastings Warner during this time period.
