After Californias admission into the Union during the Civil War, many soldiers from California enlisted in units serving in various theaters of war throughout America including San Diego County (the Department of Military Affairs being established there)) In 1862, General George S Hill ordered his 1st Brigade Combat Team stationed at Camp Kearny to be transferred to Sacramento Valley under command of Brigadier General James Kappenberger At that time Camp Kearny was located on dry riverbed about 4 miles east-southeast of downtown Atascadero Camp Kearny served as an encampment for 1st Brigade Combat Team which Detachment C from Battalion DCompany A Ulysses S Grant’s Army during their march from Placer National Forest southwest across Los Angeles County towards Yuma River December 1863 It should be noted that all these locations were within less than 2 miles of each other so it is likely that troops staging out at any given location would have come into contact with each other on occasion either militarily or administratively. In 1811á 1830 Mexican General Antonio López y Costilla defeated American forces under Captain George Armstrong near Atascadero Creek in what is now known as the Battle of San Lorenzo Creek Bridge (now mile marker number 5 on Highway 101). American forces had been pursuing Mexican General Joaquín Manuel Lopez Pico through central California when they came across him near this stream junction.LopezPico retreated into Mexico and Costilla pursued him northward overland until he reached Durango, New Mexico on September 11th of that year while LopezPico still lay in pursuit west of Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains outside present-day Paso Robles, California. A possible explanation for this bloody battlefield is that General LopezPico had decided against frontal assault upon an vastly superior foe and instead chose to retreat piecemeal rather than cross open ground where he could be flanked and overwhelmed; this decision may have resulted from his knowledge that detachments of about 100 Hispanicmounted Californios were watching from nearby hillsides while battle raged below them; if so then LopezPico's withdrawal would have been catastrophic for his army which numbered only 8600 men opposed to 200 plus Spanish troops commanded by Lt.-General Francisco Xavier Márquez with 4 cavalry brigades totaling 12000 horsemen backed up by artillery and mortar fire
