Atascadero, California is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 30,827 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is located on the shore of the Santa Lucia River and is part of the Paso Robles wine region. The first Europeans to explore what is now Atascadero were Spanish missionaries in 1769 and they named it "Atencado". In 1807, José Joaquín de Urrea y Costilla founded a mission here called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. It was destroyed by fire in 1810. In 1833, Mariano Castro y Salinas organized a group of farmers who purchased land east of Paso Robles for $600 from José Antonio Carrillo y Mendoza. They began construction on what would become Rancho Atascadero. When it was finished in 1840, it included an adobe townhall and over 50 homes which are still standing today including the original courthouse building that stands behind present day Cathedral Park (now used as the downtown library). Rancho Atascadero became one of southern California's largest agricultural estates with over 6 miles (10 km) of roads leading to its holdings totaling more than 5 million acres (20 thousand hectares). The estate included crops such as wheat, barley, oats, cotton and other vegetables; cattle; hogs; dairy products; wine grapes; as well as logs for shipbuilding and other industrial purposes. With changing technology came new opportunities for agriculture: irrigation systems were developed to improve yields through controlled flooding or ditching of water courses using canals brought in from surrounding valleys; monofilament fishing gear made use of local rivers where there was ample food supplies year-round while also exploiting resources such as oil shale near Paso Robles

Atascadero, California is located in the Mojave Desert and it was first settled in 1853 by Father Francisco Garza. The town was named after a nearby mountain, Atascadero Peak. In 1863, General Stephen Kearny and his army passed through Atascadero on their way to Battle of Sutter's Fort. Shortly after the battle, Kearny's forces burned down the fort and founded what is now called Kearny Springs. The town continued to grow until it had over 200 residents by 1907. The post office closed in 1913, but the community still thrived until World War II when it lost most of its residents due to military service or relocation. Since then, Atascadero has experienced a number of changes. In 1970, it became an incorporated city and since then has been known as one of California's most vibrant communities for arts and culture with several museums and galleries located within its boundaries. Additionally, the city is home to several colleges such as Pepperdine University and Cal State Fullerton which have played a significant role in its growth over the years; both institutions are now major employers in the city proper. Despite these successes, however, Atascadero also faces many challenges that have contributed to its volatility over time - notably strong winds that can cause extensive damage to buildings and homes; wildfires which often ravage parts of town; crime rates which remain high despite efforts by law enforcement officers to reduce them;and a lack of public transportation that makes visiting some parts of town difficult or even impossible. Notwithstanding these drawbacks though, AtascadERO remains one of California's top municipalities for innovation and creativity thanks in part to its rich cultural heritage as well as its thriving economy.
