Atascadero, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Atascadero River just east of Bakersfield and west of San Bernardino. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were Spanish traders in 1821. The area was part of Mexican territory until 1848, when it became part of United States territory following the Mexican-American War. In 1850, Atascadero became an incorporated town under US jurisdiction with a population of 400. It remained an unincorporated community until 1957 when it became a city with a population of over 10,000 people. The name "Atascadero" comes from Mission San José de la Puente (founded in 1797), which is located in present-day Atascadero and was known as "Atenco" to the Mexicans before American missionaries arrived in 1821. The mission's name may be derived from Atenco Creek which runs through the townsite near its original boundaries but there is no definitive proof for this claim; some believe that Atenco derives from Tejon Creek while others think that both creek names are related to one another and come from two nearby villages called "Atencuato" or "Taquapoalco". The first permanent European settler at what is now Atascaderos was Francisco Cahuilla who built his adobe rancho there around 1846. The Atascadero Cattle Company was founded in 1853 and became one of the most successfulranchments in California. The company operated cattle drives throughout much of California and Oregon; its products were sold at retail outlets throughout North America. In 1907, AtascadEROdeceived a $5 million investment from Standard Oil Company, which made it one of the largest localities ever to receive such an investment. After World War I, Atascadorocommitted itself to helping young men return home after serving in World War I; this initiative led to increased development around town, including the founding of schools, businesses, a library, and a hospital. In 1959, Mayor Raymond Noyes dedicated two blocks east of downtown to serve as downtown Atascadero's first commercial district; this area now includes many buildings that date back to that time including the original courthouse complex and Bank Martins Building (now part of First American Bank). Today Downtown Atascadoro boasts several restaurants and shops as well as civic institutions such as libraries and parks providing environmental programming for childrens' programs. Downtown Atascado is also home to several important historical landmarks: The former mission house is now used as an art museum;the old tannery building on Main Street has been converted into apartments; while portions of Broadway have been turned into public streets named for leading figures from early Mexican-American history (such as Francisco Juana de la Cruz Boulevard), most notably Spanish Steps remain privatelyowned property bordered by residential streets eastward until their intersection with Adobe Way near Interstate 5 (formerly State Route 491) which marks their southern border with Bakersfield
