The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is responsible for the defense of the United States Navy. The NHHC was founded in 1912 as the Naval History Division, which became part of the National Security Agency (NSA) in 1947. In 1951, the Naval History Branch was created within the NSA, and in 1958, it became a separate department within NMHC. The Department of Marine Affairs was transferred from NMHC to DOD on 1 October 1973. On 14 January 1979, NOAA was merged into DOD and all naval history functions were absorbed into that agency. He was succeeded as CO by Commander Harry Eichelberger who served until 9 July 1975 USS Ponchatoula sailed back home via Puget Sound before making another stop en route back home on 21 July 1974 only making it four days away from her original port of mooring when she went down southbound just short of Half Moon Bay California During this time period a large salvage operation was carried out by tugboats assisted by submarines using sonar and flares to help locate lost treasure off Half Moon Bay area Asbestos records discovered inside aft boiler room deck areas along side engines room bulkheads forward near midshipmast docked alongside converted merchant tanker CALYPSO also undergoing Salvage operations during same timeframe likely related to treasure hunt . Unfortunately oneanchor chain broke loose while attempting tow; resulted in loss of majority OF proceeds associated with Calypso salvage campaign
