On December 15, 1909 Mayor John Hynes sent out a call for applications for a new force which would eventually grow to include nine officers including one sergeant. On January 3rd of that year the town held its inaugural parade with five officers from neighboring Tecumseh wearing blue uniforms holding up white hats with "Atascadero" written across them. This event marked the beginning of what would become an annual tradition in which citizens would come to Parade Day to salute the newest addition to their community's police department! In 1951 Captain Clarence Bogan was appointed captain and led the department through some difficult times such as racial tension during the Watts Rebellion and changes within city government which may have had an impact on policing methods used within Atascadero at that time In 1976 Chief Deputy Sheriff Willie Burnett became acting captain after Captain Bogan retired due to health problems; he remained acting sheriff until 1982 when he also died at age 79 years old Lieutenant Colonel Tom Ziegler took over as acting lieutenant colonel upon Ziegler's retirement from law enforcement in 2002 Lieutenant Colonel Kari Wahl became acting lieutenant colonel effective September 8th 2002 after Colonel Ziegler’s death . As of September 2007 there are currently 7 sworn officers working for the Department including 2 captains (Clarence Bogan & Kari Wahl) 5 lieutenants (Tom Ziegler, Willie Burnett Jr., Lt Col Tom Ziegler Jr., Lt Col Kari Wahl), 4 sergeants (Jill Soltis-Boydell, Leroy Martinez-Hernandez, Stephane Dionisio-Sanchez) 1 corporal (Kyle Smith) and 1 reserve officer (George Costanza). With such large numbers Of Officers it is no wonder that it can be hard for individuals or businesses to find police gear or patrol services when needed !!

Atascadero is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from San Francisco. It was founded by Hernando de Soto in 1692 as a mission settlement on the banks of the Atascadero River. The first post office was established here in 1848. The town was named after Genoa, Italy, and its original site was within present-day Rancho Los Alamos National Monument. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Atascadero became part of California. In 1846, following the Mexican–American War, Mexico ceded California to the United States and Atascadero became part of the US Territory of Alta California. In 1849, Atascadero voted to become an incorporated community under US law. The first mayoralty was held by John Fenton and it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city with a population of over 60,000 people. The history of AtascadERO can be traced back to 1692 when Hernando de Soto discovered gold on his return trip from conquering Mexico City." De Soto named his new settlement at La Paz (Pasadena) after his Spanish birthplace but the name stuck only for a short time because one man had already taken it up - Pedro Nazarém Dominguez who sold what he called "Los Alamos" land on October 1st 1598 to Alonso Garcia for $20000 reales ($4000000 today). Thereafter La Paz quickly caught up with Pasadena & took precedence over it as both settlements were commonly known as "Atascador". NAzarém's heirs then divided their inheritance equally between them but they neglected to follow through with this agreement so Garcia sued them & won summary judgment which created some confusion among claimants - leading perhaps eventually to Santa Fe getting priority? This situation would not last long however as Garcia died suddenly without naming any successors... Now property owner’s title reverted back to original grantees! In 1776 Don José Francisco Magallanes y Segura donated 3 leagues (or 3 square miles), or 9 square kilometers or .8 sq mi., making him also grantee/purchaser/beneficiary thereof forevermore! So began our namesake: “La Habana” meaning Havana Townships due east [of] San Francisco Bay... By 1800 there were 137 lots patented--almost all along coastal stretches near Point Conception: “ Las Pulgas” (Havana Township?), Miramar?, Monterey Bay? All Lots Nos 2-142 inclusive (& boundaries included later boundary changes), excepting those patented northward adjoining Rancho Los Alamos National Monument lot No 455)... Most residents kept their surnames even though portions now belongingto other families picked up various useful epithets such as Chavez [the founder], Amado [the civic trustee], etc., thruout ensuing centuries reflecting local political subdivisions during that period.)
