The wine industry is one of the most important aspects of local economy and assets here are many wineries that have made some amazing wines including Chateau Montrachet (owned by Toyota), Chateau Lafite Rothschild (owned by Heineken), and even Signac’s which makes champagnes like Petit Verdot Blanc (owned by Bollinger). Atascadero is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 26,858 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is located on the central coast of Monterey Peninsula. The first people to live in what is now Atascadero were Native Americans who built lodges near what is now its downtown area in the late 18th century. The first European settler was José Gabriel Moraga y Escobar, who arrived in 1792 and named it San Fernando de las Pulgas (also called San Francisco). He had a rancho grant from Spain and named it after his birthplace of Zaragoza, Aragon. In 1821, Moraga sold his land to Andrés Manuel de Alvarado y Ocampo, who renamed it Atascadero After he became governor of Baja California on July 10, 1821. However, most of the town's development occurred afterAlvarado's death in 1835 when his widow married don Pedro Armijos Ruiz de la Vega. In 1860s local resident Lorenzo Peña founded what became known as "El Rancho Grande" which consisted of 213 acres (8 km²) north of today's downtown area and extended into present-day Atascaderos hills eastward beyond where the Pacific Coast Highway meets Interstate 880 across Romero Woods Road. El Rancho Grande was one of many Mexican land grants given out during the Mexican War to American volunteers seeking independence from Mexico. It continued to exist as an agricultural enterprise until 1917 when it was acquired by John Sutter for $1 million dollars which made him head cattle rancher on the Stanford campus; Sutter also bought much 230-acre (100 km²) section south of town that formed part of modern day Palo Alto before moving his herd overland to Santa Clara Valley in 1853 and establishing himself there as one of Northern California's largest landowners and business men including being elected sheriff of Contra Costa County twice (1860–64 & 1880–82). In 1906 Adolph Ziegfeld opened his first theater at 166 Mission Street where he used two small rooms rented upstairs from Mrs Earnest Blanchard whose father ran The Overstreet Theatre down Main Street which burned down in 1904 but was rebuilt with larger seating capacity by Pabst Brewing Company Owner Julius Rosenwald within three years back then entertainment wasn't considered a big deal especially since movies only started being shown about 10 miles away at Grover Cleveland Stadium then 4 miles away at Western Electric Place hence why old movie theaters like The Overstreet are still standing despite having been around since 1906 while newer places have been bulldozed or converted into condos or commercial buildings etc... till this day no one knows for sure why such a large building like that went up in smoke only 3 years later
