The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to its citizens abroad. Gifts have included items such as computers, books, and software. The gift history began with the arrival of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber from the United StatesAAF and was continued with the donation of a new Spitfire fighter plane by Major General Arthur H. Elgin, Jr. in 1945. In 1951, a Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft arrived as part of the USAF's Naval Air Facility - Atwater (NAF) program and was dedicated to the community by its donor, Rear Admiral John W. Buckley, USN (Ret). The Gift History continues today with accepting donations of large number of helicopters from various helicopter manufacturers throughout California.
Atwater is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,438 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Atwater River. The first post office in Atwater opened on December 12, 1875. Atwater was founded by James H. Atwater and his brother-in-law, Wm. Denton Armstrong. The first store in town was built near the current site of the courthouse in 1876 and operated by J.H.'s father-in-law, William Denton Armstrong Jr.. In 1880, J.H.'s wife Fannie Crouse established a general store with her husband John Crouse as manager (Fannie's husband had died that year). By 1886 there were five stores in town; three of which were organized as joint stock companies (the others were incorporated separately). In 1893 ATCO Real Estate Agency bought out all but one of the original stockholders of Joint Stock Company No. 2 (Joint Stock Co.) which later became known as Sun Valley Realty Company Incorporated In 1898 Pillsbury grocery store opened along side First National Bank and Post Office building on Main Street In 1903 ATCO merged with Wells Fargo & Co., becoming part of First American National Bank/Bankers Trust Company from 1919 to 1969 Atwater also served as a location for Warner Bros.'s production plant from 1915 to 1949 . The plant manufactured their then popular features such as "Babysitters" and "Precious". In 1951 Warner Bros./UA moved their entire film manufacturing operations to Monterrey, Mexico where they remain to this day. As early as 1916 George Naylor began marketing soft drinks called "Pepsi" and "Coca Cola" at what would become known as the Pepsi fountain outside Main Street drugstore . On February 26th 1917 Heflin Hardware Store opened across from Pepsi Fountain with refreshment stand serving up ice cream cones called "Cindy", candy bars called "Peanuts", cigarettes etc .. The next year Heflin closed due to lack of customers while still selling food items like hot dogs an hamburgers From 1922 until 1954 Asimov’s Pharmacy operated next door sponsored by Paramount Pictures who gave away free popcorn every time someone purchased a movie ticket stub Some think that he may have been given access to some type of secret filming area behind Paramount Pictures building during this time period

It took its name from the nearby Atwater Reservoir. The city is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and borders Agoura Hills to the north, Winchester to the east, and South Pasadena to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, Atwater has a total area of , all of it land. As of July 1, 2000, there were 362 people living in households in Atwater City. There were 532 households out of which 30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43% were non-families. 32% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.92
