The Atwater Air Force Base Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of airforce gifts. The museum, founded in 1969, preserves and displays over 1,000 items from across the USAF inventory. Some of the most well-known USAF air force gifts include the Wright brothers' design for a flying machine that could be used as a bomber and fighter aircraft; the Bell X1a helicopter; and Project Mercury: The United States space program which culminated in America's first manned mission to Earth in July of 1959. While at Atwater AFB, visitors can explore both the Museum's collections of military surplus planes and equipment dating back to World War II as well as artifacts from special events like Operation Neptune's Spear which saw American forces invade North Vietnam in 1965.

The Atwater Air Force Base gift history can be traced back to the early days of the base. In 1948, Colonel Harry H. Aspinwall donated land in what is now Atwater to the Air Force. In 1957, General Curtis LeMay donation gave rise to one of the most famous gifts ever given to an American military installation: The M-1 Abrams tank! The tank was gifted by General LeMay in memory of his fallen friends and brothers-in-arms in World War II. In 1991, Major General Merrill McAllister dedicated a new hangar at Atwater AFB which became home to Operation Desert Storm/ Desert Shield operations. This event marks an important milestone for Atwater AFB as it became one of America's primary launch points for missile launches during this time frame. Today, Atwater AFB is home to two US Marine Corps battalions (the 2nd Battalion Combat Team 1st Marines and 3rd Battalion Combat Team 8th Marines) as well as five USAF squadrons; assigned from all over America - including California - providing wingspread deterrence coverage across North America with F-15s, A-10s, KC-135s, EA-6B Prowlers and C‑130Js!
Atwater, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 68,898 at the 2010 census. The Atwater area has been inhabited by human beings for at least 10,000 years. The first permanent settler in what is now Atwater was William Atwater in 1853. He named his property after his brother-in-law, James Irvine. The town of Atwater began to form aroundRailroad Depot No. 2 on the east side of town in 1887. It developed rapidly because of its location and as a result had a population of over 100 people by 1890. By 1907, however, it had shrunk to just 12 people due to lack of development and growth within the limits of the town square. In 1910 voters approved incorporation as an unincorporated community with a population of 15 residents under the name "Atwater". In 1916 the name was changed to "Atwater" because it became popular among citrus growers throughout southern California who called their fruit "atwaters". It was during World War II that Atwater experienced its most significant growth with an influx of soldiers and civilians from nearby Los Angeles who were needed for military service or production lines at Kaiser Aluminum Company's aluminum plants outside Santa Ana and San Bernardino counties; these workers created new jobs that helped spur economic development in Atwater and other surrounding areas during wartime times when local businesses closed their doors because there wasn't enough work available for both men and womenisans alike due to rationing regulations that applied specifically to war industries such as munitions production Today, much like when it first formed, Atwater is home to many families who have contributed greatly through their businesses or philanthropy to help make life easier for others here locally and statewide including one recent example being Donny & Marie's which opened up shop right next door to Hooters restaurant across Main Street in 2016 creating more than 350 direct job opportunities across the county while supporting local charities

In 1973, MAC activated its first Tactical Air Command squadron to fly refueled propeller airplanes into battle against Viet Cong forces in Southeast Asia. The following year saw the activation of the first Tactical Fighter Wing at MacDill AFB in Florida which flew Lockheed P-3Cs and McDonnell Douglas F-4C fighters.
Atwater, California is a small community in the San Joaquin Valley of southern California. It is located about 33 miles (53 kilometers) east of Fresno and 28 miles (45 kilometers) north-northeast of Bakersfield. The Atwater post office was established on July 10, 1887, and continued operation until it closed on October 15, 1966. The town was named for John Atwater, an early settler who purchased land near the present day intersection of State Route 128 and U.S. Route 101. In 1909, Atwater built a sawmill on the banks of the San Joaquin River which continues to produce lumber today. In 1954, the community became a ghost town when its last resident died at the age of 98 years old. Today few physical remains remain from this time period as most residents left for other parts of California or migrated to other areas during that era due to social changes brought about by World War II and thenthe Cold War Era. However, many oral histories from those that did stay are still preserved through interviews with current inhabitants. One such story tells how when people would go out into town after dark they would see "ghosts" walking around their homes which they interpreted as ominous portents foretelling their own death or departure from Atwater forever.
