The Atwater Army Department Store was one of the first stores in California to sell military items. It opened in 1851 and became a well-known shopping destination for soldiers and their families. The store's first shelves were stocked with rifles, pistols, artillery ammunition, clothing, tents, and other military gear. Army gifts have been a part of the Atwater community for centuries. In 1862, when the Union army invaded California, General George Bancroft ordered the Atwater Armory to provide 1 million rounds of ammunition to defend the state. The store continued to sell military supplies until 1961. Today, there is an Army detachment stationed at Fort Irwin in San Diego County that provides goods and services to local residents as part of the United States Military Academy System. This Garrison features an American flag flying out front and an Armed Forces banner on top reading "Atwater Army Depot."

Atwater is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 23,815 at the 2010 census. Atwater is a small town with a few thousand residents and it is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The Atwater Creek watershed includes most of what are now Atwater and Arden townships in Kern County, as well as parts of unincorporated areas located to the east and north of these townships. The creek empties into Tulare Lake within reach of most residents. Atwater was first settled by pioneers in 1851, when John Hance and his family founded Hanceville on the banks of Atwater Creek. In 1865, George Atherton opened a store at what is today known as Main Street in Arden Township. By 1870, Atwater had 10 stores and 60 people living there. By 1880, the community had 30 stores and 100 people living there; it became an incorporated town on April 14, 1881. During World War II (1939-1945), portions of Kern County were placed under federal jurisdiction for military purposes due to strategic bomber bombing raids against Los Angeles that were considered possible targets because they occurred over agricultural regions that could be used for storage or other militant activities without fear that they would be bombed back up again if returned to civilian use. As part of this jurisdictional arrangement, various small communities near Lompoc – including Atwater – were included in area code 5662 from 1941 until its deletion in 1997; then area code 925 from 1997 until its addition on November 2nd 2017 In 1951, Ivar Sjögren donated land to form developed into Anheuser-Busch Park adjacent to south side park across street from post office which later became Home Plate Pizza Place . This park has been home to various events such as American Bandstand concerts since 1978

The first stores opened in downtown Atwater on May 20, 1907. The first company to open a store there was the Jardine Rubber Company with four employees. In 1908, the City of Atwater approved plans for an American Legion Post No. 1 which served as a gathering place for the town's residents during their military service abroad or when attending county fairs or other events statewide.. In 1911, George Atwater donated land east of First Street to build what would become known as Villa Park Cemetery; it became one of Los Angeles' most popular tourist destinations thanks to its views of Hollywood Hills and Century City mountains from its grounds. He also endowed the George Atwater School District Library in Villa Park which still operates today. On July 12, 1912 Mayor Harry Siegel dedicated an elaborate water main system that replaced a previous system that had failed catastrophically just two weeks earlier. The new system—later designated as "the best in Southern California"—was designed by noted engineer John Prentice Root and built by local contractor C B Marshall & Sons under contract with Laughlin Steel Corporation (now Paterson Metalurgical). One ofdrinkers favorite pastimes were fishing tournaments organized by civic groups such as the Elks Club and Rotary International who would set up traps near shoreline along various creek channels throughout southern Ventura County until they caught enough fish to supply many local bars during summertime What are now called "Creek Wars" took place each year between anglers from different communities trying to catch whatever species were available at that particular time
