When the Atwater Army Ammunition Plant was founded in 1907, it was one of the first military installations in California. The plant manufactured ammunition for the US Cavalry, Infantry and Artillery units as well as munitions for other nations. In 1945, Atwater became part of the United StatesArmy Pacific Command and was renamed Fort MacArthur. It reverted to its original name on 1 July 1951 when all US Army installations were redesignated as Fort MacArthur Joint Forces Command (FJFC). On 15 October 1957, Fort MacArthur Joint Forces Command (FJFC) was re-designated as First United States Army Corps Area Headquarters (FUAHQ). The current name of Ft. MacArthur is given to it by Major General John C. Maxwell who served as Director, Plans and Programs at HQ FUA from 2 September 1998 until his retirement on 30 December 2002. From its inception through World War II, Atwater Army Ammunition Plant played an important role in American history. It supported troops during both world wars and has been a source of ammunition for many armies around the world ever since. During World War II, Atwater produced more than 350 million rounds of ammunition which accounted for over 25% of all US armament production that year. Additionally, Atwater made contributions to numerous national defense programs including Project Paperclip which helped create more than 4500 American jobs after World War II. Today, Ft. MacArthur is home to a number of museums and archives associated with military history including the Museum Of History And Technology which tells the story of how technology has shaped warfare since antiquity; The Japanese Arsenal Museum which displays artifacts from Japan's war effort against America during WWII; The Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & museum which discusses President Abraham Lincoln's role in American Civil War; and finally The Doherty Center For Naval History Which houses artifacts related to USS Constitution’s Battle Of Lake Erie Campaign 1812-14.]

Atwater is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 26,033 at the 2010 census. Atwater is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The first post office in Atwater opened in 1872. The site of Atwater was chosen by surveyors for the new town of Vista on November 17, 1871 following a land grant from former Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna to John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hearn. The town was named after Major General James W. Atwater (1792–1877), commander of U.S. Army troops during Mexico's War for Independence and one of Santa Anna's lieutenants general during that conflict, who had also purchased Rancho San Vicente near present-day Ventura County when it was still part of Alta California Province.. In 1872, Atwater's first post office opened under the name "Atwaterville". By 1874, it had outgrown Vista and changed its name to "Atwater". In 1888, it became an incorporated city with a population of 20 people; however its growth slowed due to lack of freshwater resources and competition from nearby cities such as Huntington Beach and Northridge. A streetcar line linking downtown Atwaterville with both ends of Lake Elsinore began operation on October 13, 1912; passengers were carried on horse cars until 1925 when the electric streetcar company Electrified Railroad Corporation made service available using trolleys. On July 14, 1933, Mayor John O'Connell proposed that the City Council pass an ordinance declaring war against Nazi Germany pursuant to Article XII Section 1(b) of the California Constitution which read: "The citizens or Municipal Authority thereof shall be immediately upon receipt thereof called into military service in any manner prescribed by law." On August 12th 1933 City Manager Harry Aiken recommended passage but no action was taken until December 6th when councilmember Leslie Klinge moved to table mayoral recommendation because he felt it would give Nazi sympathizers an advantage over opponents in upcoming elections scheduled for January 3rd 1934

Atwater, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Atwater's history dates back to 1847 when it was established as an agricultural community by Jedediah Smith and his brother-in-law John Waddell. In 1857, Atwater became part of the newly created County of Plumas. The first post office in Atwater was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1904. In 1861, Atwater became the site of what is now known as the Battle of Sanitary Landfill which resulted in a victory for United States forces over Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. From 1865 until its incorporation into Plumas County in 1907, Atwater served as the seat of government for both counties. In 1916, It merged with neighboring Livermore to form the City of Livermore and remains one of its corporate citizens to this day. Today, many businesses operate within the boundaries of Atwater including utilities such as National Grid and PG&E; clothing companies such as Hanes and Levi Strauss; convenience stores such as Safeway and Circle K; restaurants such as Panda Express and Longhorn Steakhouse; and a variety of retail outlets including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy’s Inc., Albertsons Pharmacy (now Albertsons), Piggly Wiggly Hamburgers & Subs., Sam’s Club (now Sam’s Clubs), Lowe’s Home Improvement Company, Ford Motor Company dealership (closed down in 2013), Schlumberger Ltd.'s Offshore Services Division - The People's Offshore Drilling Unit - located offshore off Point Conception Island
Atwater, California was founded in 1879 by brothers Isaac and George Atwater. The town was named after John Sutter's Ranch at the mouth of the Sacramento River. The Atwaters were early settlers in what is now Northern California. They operated a ferry service from their ranch to Stockton and other towns on the central coast of California. In 1889, they built a wharf on the north side of the Sacramento River and began shipping goods to San Francisco.
