The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and protection on the California coast since 1851. The first coast guard station was established at Tijuana in 1857, and the present-day Coast Guard base at Atwater was opened in 1912. Today, the Coast Guard patrols more than 12,000 miles of coastline in Southern California and Northern Mexico. They provide a variety of services such as search and rescue, response to natural disasters,Homeland security,and naval gunfire support. In addition to their duties on the water, the Coast Guard also maintains an airfield within Atwater that can accommodate helicopters for Search and Rescue operations. Atwater, California is a town in Riverside County, California. The population was 21,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. Atwater was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and other financiers as a small farming community on a bluffs overlooking the then unincorporated community of Gossamer Springs. It grew rapidly with new businesses and institutions opening up such as Gossamer Springs School and Gossamer Springs Methodist Episcopal Church (now Cathedral of Angels). In 1907, Atwater became an incorporated city under the name of "Atwater" and annexed parts of neighbouring Riverside County. The economy has been based largely on agriculture for most of its history, but now it is principally composed of services such as business consulting, real estate sales and rentals, health care, education, law enforcement and government services. These include local jails and prisons; the nearby Menifee Regional Park; two airports serviced by Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – Orange County's John Wayne Airport (CAE) and Riverside County's Robert Foothill Airport (Riverside-Foothill), both within less than two miles of town; three water towers that power much of Atwater's infrastructure – one along Route 66 which supplies drinking water to most residents; two large shopping centres located in central Atwater – One Regency Mall & One Hillsborough Shopping Centre - each with over 1 million square feet (93 hectares) floor area; several smaller retail outlets scattered throughout the town centre including a drugstore/medical supply store/grocery store/bank; major supermarkets anchored by Kroger Inc.'s Grocery Division - anchor tenant - across fromRegency mall In addition to its core residential areas known as Downtown Atwater or Southtown Village adjacent to Regency mall which houses some professional office buildings used by various businesses there are also: Midway neighborhood just north east off I-8 about 2 miles east from downtown #1 contains many Tudorstyle homes built between 1915-1920 mainly Baptist churches have open fields near them giving also views into neighborhoods #2 Bishop Arroyo Neighborhood directly south west off Interstate 10 close to City College includes newer homes since 2000 mostly Latino families who farm land near their homes

Atwater, California was founded on July 4, 1879 by George Atwater and his wife, Mercedes. The town was named after Commodore John C. Atwater who led the United States Navy in its first sea battle off San Diego Bay. The town quickly grew and became an major port for the region. In 1912, Atwater donated land to the City of San Francisco for a public park that is today known as Golden Gate Park. The city of San Francisco built a new courthouse and jail in 1915-16 using funds from Atwater. The original buildings were demolished in the 1960s but their foundations remain as part of Golden Gate Park. The Atwaters lived in their home at 5555 Mission Street until they sold it to the city in 1985. Today, 5555Mission Street still stands as a reminder of what once happened here. George Atwater's contributions to American history are numerous and include helping to establish San Francisco while also donating land to make it a great city that we know today. He is also respected for his leadership during World War II and has been inducted into multiple halls of fame including the National Baseball Hall Of Fame and Museum and the United States Naval Academy’s Class Of 1966 class hall of fame
Atwater was a small town in San Francisco County, California, United States. It was located on the east bank of the Sacramento River, at its confluence with Atwater Creek. The first post office at Atwater opened on November 1, 1852. The name "Atwater" likely derived from an Algonquian word meaning place where there is water. The town was destroyed by fire in 1876 and never recovered economically. In 1906 it merged with adjacent Redding to form Redding-Atwater.
