Atwater is a small community located in the hills of southern Orange County, California. The town was founded in 1887 by John Atwater and his wife, Emma. Atwater is known for its fertile agricultural land and water resources, as well as its rich history. Atwater's earliest settlers were farmers who arrived from Northern California in the late 1800s. By 1907, Atwater had a population of just over 100 people. During the 1930s and 1940s, Atwater experienced some dramatic growth due to the development of citrus production and other industries. In recent years, however, Atwater has slowly been declining due to changes in its economy and demographics. John Atwater was born on February 12th, 1847 in what is now Oceanside, California. He worked as a surveyor before becoming an entrepreneur who invested in land and irrigation systems around Orange County. By 1886, John had married Emma Hildebrandt and moved to Atwater with their two children: John Jr., also called John (1887-1970), who became a farmer; and Meta (1889-1973). The family soon began expanding their holdings into new territory around present day Anaheim Hills including Parts Unknown (now Garden Grove). In 1903 they built what is now The John A. Altow House which remains one of Anaheim's most popular tourist attractions today. John Jr.'s death at age 44 set off a series of family feuds that continue to this day within the local community - one that continues to be fought out through various legal proceedings each year since he left no assets behind when he died. Despite this ongoing warfare, many members of the original Atwater family still live scattered around Southern Orange County today - keeping their memories active through annual reunions hosted here at The Altow House Museum & Spa where they enjoy refreshments while sharing stories about their roots back home at Onslow Street Station #2 near modern day Irvine Spectrum Center

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,636 people, 592 households, and 444 families residing in the town. The population density was 32 people per square mile (13/km²). There were 616 housing units at an average density of 15 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99% White and 0% Native American; Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%.
