The company was founded by Alfredo and Irma Atwater, whoowned a small grocery store in downtown Atwater. In the early 1970s, they started roast their own beans and sell them directly to customers through their store. Atwater is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 6,405 at the 2010 census. Atwater was founded in 1887 by brothers-in-law George and Edwin Atwater. It became a city in 1907 and an incorporated village in 1912.

Atwater is the only incorporated municipality in Los Angeles County and it is also one of the few cities in California without extraterritorial jurisdiction. The first Europeans to visit Atwater were on horseback from 1769 to 1771 when Jedediah Smith and his party passed through the area on their way from San Francisco to Monterey Peninsula. In 1821, John Sutter came across the arm of Los Angeles Harbor just west of Atwater Creek and named it after him for his discovery there. By 1827, most of what is now Atwater had been developed as part of Rancho La Brea (now City Of Carson). A post office called "Atwater" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1863, George Beaumont Way opened up what is now downtown Los Angeles with an orange grove that became world-famous for its color because he grew oranges there. The Grove was later bought by Pee Dee Land Company which built a new citrus orchard near downtown LA that still produces oranges today. In 1902, developer Harry Chandler purchased parcels surrounding Beaumont Way and began developing what would become Downtown LA into one of America's leading commercial districts characterized by high-rise buildings and single-family homes along Grand Avenue NE between First Street NE and Third Street NE. Downtown LA was renamed "Atwater" in 1912 following incorporation as a city by Mayor Hoot Gibson using land donated by developers Chandler and Wiggin along with other properties included in the original annexation agreement between Pasadena Municipal Corporation (Pasadena) and Los Angeles County (Los Angeles). The name stuck - even though Downtown LA continued to be known as "Beaumont Way" until 1974 when it became part of downtownLA again following annexation from Pasadena pursuant to Proposition 13 (the so-called "doubling time"). For many years thereafter, both names have been used interchangeably within city boundaries consistent with their respective historical origins: former Pasadena Municipal Corporation land acquired under annexation agreement #1; current City Of Anaheim annexation agreement #2 retroactive thereto; while property holdings within newly formedCityOfLA remain jointly administered according to Agreement No.#3 entered into among all parties hereinabove relative thereto viz.: City Of Anaheim et al.; atwatercityhall@gmail.com

In 1907, Atwater donated land to the City of Pasadena for its first public school. The city's first library was built on this same acreage in 1912. In 1916, George Atwater died and was succeeded as president of the Southern California Water District by his son Alvarus H. Atwater Jr.. Alvarus H. Atwater Sr.'s death in 1951 left the district with three trustees - Alvarus H. Atwaters III (1920-1952), Edward Rolph Keyes (1927-1981) and Lawrence Dillingham (1945-2009). The trustees appointed Gerald honored father James Earl Carter as chairman emeritus of the board in 1983; he served until 1990 when he stepped down due to health reasons. On December 24, 2009, it was announced that retired judge Royce Lamberth had been elected Chairman Emeritus effective January 1st 2010 On October 12thin 1959 two oil rigs were sunk near Refugio Point State Beach off coast of Santa Barbara county after becoming stranded while servicing an offshore lease agreement between BP and Texaco Incorporated.. A total of 33 people lost their lives including 5 boys aged 11 years old who were playing onshore at Refugio Point when both rigs sunk around 9pm Central Time September 11th 1959: nine days before America's involvement in Vietnam began
Atwater was founded in 1876 by George Atwater and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the Atwater River that ran through it. George Atwater started the first physical plant in the area, a flour mill. The mill manufactured flour for local markets and also exported flour to other parts of California. In 1886, the Atwaters built a home on their property which still stands today. They were able to build this home due to their wealth from their businesses. In 1914, they donated land to establish what is now called University Park. This park is used for purposes such as recreation, education, and research.
