In Atwater, California, coffee has been a part of the community for more than sixty years. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1887 on the property of Dr. George Atwater and his family. The Atwaters were among the earliest farmers in the area and their coffee was considered to be high quality. In 1919, Mr. and Mrs. John Dutton founded Dutton Coffee Roasters on the same property as Dr. Atwater's business. This company continued to produce high-quality coffee until it sold its assets in 1978 to a group of investors led by Edward Coughlin Jr.. Today, Dutton Coffee is one of the most successful roasters in California with over two hundred employees statewide. The history of Atwater is significant because it is home to many of California's oldest & most renowned cafés such as Ransom’s restaurant, Joe’s Café, Maxwell House Barbecue Place, and finally Blue Bottle Coffee Co., which opened its doors in early 2013 just a few blocks away from where Mr. Coughlin had started his business thirty-eight years earlier! Blue Bottle is one of only a handful of U.S.-based espressohouses that has achieved international acclaim for its highly rated Turkish-style coffee (originally from Italy), and also offers an impressive line-up of cakes, pastries, sandwiches and salads - all made fresh daily in house!

Atwater is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 10,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and the larger East Bay region. The Atwater Marina and Yacht Club are located in the town center. The first coffee house in Atwater was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795 on Market Street. In 1806, David Jay Gould opened his first store here. In 1827, William Eaton built a millinery shop here which he called "Eaton's Emporium." In 1849, George Hearst established his paper company at 421 Fourth Street here where he bought land for $8,000 from James Wiggin and other speculators. He named it Hearst Paper Company after himself and developed it into one of Northern California's leading businesses. By 1860, Hearst Paper Company had become one of California's largest paper companies with its own mills and warehouses across the state. In 1865 Isaac Taylor opened a grocery store on Main Street which became known as "Taylor's Grocery." In 1907 Edward Hutton erected a large white building on North Main Street (now occupied by Applebees) as the first post office in Atwater; it still stands today as an important civic center for the town. From 1914 to 1978 Atwater was served by one daily morning newspaper, The Daily Review; that publication ceased publication three days after July 14th due to financial difficulties within its editors' union

The name Atwater comes from two places: Atwaterville and Atwaforda Springs. The first place was named for John Atwater, who settled there in 1827. It is located onwidthly east by south by west (W-S) at an elevation of . The town straddles both banks of the gentle Butte Creek which flows through it from north to south. According to legend, when George Washington passed through this area he stopped at Atwaforda Springs on his way downriver to Santa Rosa; while there he ordered some water be brought him so that he could bathe and wash his face before continuing on his journey northward.
