Atwater, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was first settled by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s and became a United States military post during World War II. Atwater is now a small city with a population of about 14,000 people. The history of Atwater dates back to 1848 when it was part of Rancho San Joaquin de Atwater. In 1874 it became the town of Atwater after being separated from Rancho San Joaquin. The townsite was named for General John C. Frémont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been present at Bodega Bay on September 12, 1847. In 1906, Atwater's predecessor townsite, Rancho San Joaquin de Atwater, were combined with that of nearby Cottonwood to form the new City of Cottonwood. Today, cotton farming continues to be an important part of Atwater's economy and its parks are home to many different types of birds and animals as well as some popular tourist attractions such as ATV trails and waterfalls.
Atwater was founded in 1887 by the brothers George and Edward Atwater. The Atwaters were farmers who relocated from San Francisco to start a new life in an isolated community on the Central Coast of California. In 1888, they named their community Atwater after their firstborn son, Edward. By 1893, the Atwaters had five children and decided to add another family member to the community: their daughter Lillie (Lizzie) Atwater. In 1908, Lillie's husband John Hutton came to live with them and together they started farming seasonally across three acres of land between Sacramento and Stockton in central Contra Costa County. They named their farm Hutton Field because it was just outside of town where they grew crops for themselves and sold what they produced to local merchants. The family prospered until World War II when John died suddenly at age 56 while working on his farm; Lillie continued farming with her daughters until she passed away in 1978. Today, the property continues to be used as part of Contra Costa County's agricultural landscape
