Atwater, California is a small town in the North Bay region of San Francisco County, California. The population was 3,351 at the 2010 census. It is located near Interstate 280 and Highway 101. The Atwater post office was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed on October 15, 1966. The community takes its name from John Atwater, one of the original settlers of San Francisco.
