The Navy deployed a gift to Atwater in 1944. The USS Augusta was the ship that transported the USS Intrepid, the first aircraft carrier in commission, from San Francisco to Atwater on July 24th of that year. The Intrepid had been brought down by fire shortly after launch and was towed back to California. On December 8th, 1945, the USS Lexington arrived at Atwater with a shipment of small boats for use as landing craft during World War II. These boats were later named the Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) and served as an important part of amphibious warfare during both WWII and postwar conflicts. In 1970, an LCI(L) was donated by the navy to Atwater High School in memory of sailors who lost their lives while serving with distinction in service to our country. This boat is now known as “The Hagride” and is used for community events and special occasions such as Graduations and Birthdays.

Atwater is a small city located in Orange County, California. With a population of just over 100,000 people, Atwater is the tenth-most populous city in the state. The city was founded by John Atwater and his brothers in 1879. It has been named after George Atwater, the father of John Atwater. The city was first settled on land that now includes much of what is today Orange County. In 1910, Atwater became one of three cities incorporated in Orange County. The other two were Santa Ana and Irvine. In 1959, however, the City of Anaheim was created from portions of Atwater and Santa Ana. As an agricultural center for many years, Atwater has also become an important manufacturing town for companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing Company.
