The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of giving back to the community. From its early days as an all-volunteer force in World War II, to its current role as one of America's premier military forces, the USAF has always been committed to supporting our local communities. One of the most significant contributions made by the USAF was the establishment of Auburn University in 1946. The university's roots date back to 1912 when it was founded by soldiers from nearby San Bernardino County. In 1952, General Curtis LeMay organized the first USAF Wing at Auburn, creating a facility that would serve as a proving ground for new aircraft and technology. Today, Auburn is home to two major Air Forces wings - The 1st Fighter Wing and The 82nd Fighter Wing - as well as numerous subordinate units. In honor of AFB's long history, we are honoring some of its most memorable moments with a series of airforce gifts. In 1951, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which mandated that all branches of the military must receive Gifts for Life Awards in perpetuity. This act also set up a system in which members could give gifts to one another on an annual basis. In 1967, General Curtis LeMay instituted Operation Golden Spike which gave away more than 1 million items to member agencies across America. This event is often cited as the beginning of the modern air force gift culture. From then on, gifted items were regularly sent to member bases around the country in order to promote morale and appreciation for service. Additionally, many officers and enlisted personnel now own their own homes within the USAF and freely share any gifts they may have received throughout their lives with friends and family members. Today, airforce gift giving remains a highly popular tradition within our Armed Forces; it’s an important way to show your support for your troops and help promote volunteerism within our community spirit!

Auburn, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1887 by John S. Goodrich and his wife Anna BryantGoodrich. The town has since grown to encompass over 96 square miles (240 km2). Auburn is located at 36° 25′ N, 93° 47′ W on the San Joaquin River approximately east of Bakersfield and north of Los Angeles. The first known occupants of Auburn were the Hahns who came down the river in 1847 from Texas. In 1876, James Fenton built an adobe cabin on the banks of the San Joaquin River opposite what is now the Hastings Cemetery. A year later, he married Anna Bryant Goodrich and they started trading goods along the riverbank.
