In 1849, the 1st Infantry Regiment of the California Volunteers was organized at Auburn and served in the Mexican-American War. The regiment was mustered out of service in 1853. In 1861, the 1st Infantry Regiment of the California Volunteers was reorganized as a battalion and garrisoned at Fort Tejon before being transferred to Camp Sumner for duty in California’s secession crisis. On January 8, 1862, this battalion became part of Harper’s Ferry Brigade under General John C. Fremont and fought at Second Bull Run prior to its transfer to Richmond on February 14th. After Confederate forces retreated from Richmond on April 9th, 1862, this battalion took up quarters at Winchester Barracks until it relieved First Battalion of Sacramento Cavalry for duty with General Joe Hooker’s commanding army in Virginia that September. This battalion fought engagements at Champion Hill and Antietam before returning home on October 3rd. The 1st Infantry Regiment of the Californias served consecutively from November 15th through December 17th before being ordered south to join MajorGeneral George Buford’s Department of Alabama during Reconstruction following the Civil War. On April 1865, this regiment arrived back home after serving throughout Reconstruction Era in various posts including (but not limited to) Los Angeles County where it remained untilactivated on October 4th Declaring itself disbanded on that date eleven years earlier

Auburn, California is a small city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 9,839 at the 2010 census. The city is named after Auburn University, one of the largest universities in the United States. The first permanent occupant of Auburn was James Irvine who arrived with his family in 1849. He started a school and vineyard near present-day downtown Auburn. In 1855, he founded the town of Irvine on what is now east side of downtown Auburn. Irvine's heirs sold their holdings to John Sutter in 1867 and Sutter built new buildings on what are today First Street and Third Avenue North. In 1907, there were only 7 residents living in town; by 1915 it hadoutgrown its original size to 23 people when it merged with neighboring Livermore to form Livermore City. In 1919, Livermore City annexed part of the adjacent unincorporated community of Niles which had been developed as a suburb for workers at nearby General Motors plants. In 1962, local officials decided that Auburn would become an independent city and plans began for annexation by Livermore City but this plan was never completed due to objections from local businesses and citizens concerned about potential lost tax revenue from being pulled into Livermore's jurisdiction
