Auburn is located on the Kern River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles and about 25 miles (40 km) north of Riverside. It also includes parts of what are now Kern County and Riverside County. The townsite where Auburn now stands was first settled by emigrants from Russia who called themselves the Peebles in 1847. In 1861, when American Civil War veteran Ulysses S. Grant served as Governor of California, he ordered that all men within one mile of his home must turn in their weapons to be registered with the state government or face military service. This order extended to all Californians east of the mountains as well, including those living in Pueblo de las Aguas (now part of Fresno), which lay to the immediate west on federal land grant known as Rancho Los Encinas de Santa Ana de Anza (later San Bernardino County). On April 4, 1865, during Union General John Blythe's invasion of southern California under orders from President Abraham Lincoln, local residents led an uprising against Confederate forces near present-day Auburn. After some initial skirmishes and burning civilian homes along with Confederate property at Apache Pass Road near present-dayFillmore Avenue and West Fullerton Boulevard, Union troops arrived on nearby Mount Olivet to demand surrender; only then did any real fighting begin. A force composed mostly of cavalry quickly routed Confederate forces commanded by Brigadier General Jens Ludwig; several hundred fleeing soldiers were killed or captured before they could escape back into Mexico City via Blythe's railway lines leading into Northern Mexico City... In response to this successful rebellion against Union authority--and likely due largely to American public support for Stephen Tilden's candidacy for US Senator from California against Republican incumbent John Frémont--General Blythe ordered his army disbanded on July 26th and returned home without further loss or bloodshed... As a result of this event locally known as "The Battle at Mount Olivet," one thousand Americans were confirmed dead or missing in action during the war while many more were injured... By 1870 a small community had emerged around what is today Auburn consisting primarilyof farmers who had leased land from Mexican Land grants apportioned among Southern Californian landowners... Farming became an important economic activity here until World War II when production shifted towards building aircraft plants throughout Southern California - Ford Motor Company being perhaps its most famous exponent... Prior to World War II much development took place outside town limits taking form primarily in what are now unincorporated areas east side Highway 6 exit off I-580 between Fillmore Avenue/West Fullerton Boulevard and Mount Olivet Drive/Mount Olivet Road)... Today much more agricultural activity takes place within town limits with major crops include almonds, grapeseed oil production for plastics manufacture & other industrial uses.. In recent years Auburn has experienced rapid growth overshadowed recently by Thousand Oaks which has seen similar gentrification but more suburban housing developments such as medical complexes & luxury hotels close away businesses leaving behind traditional retail stores etc
