The station served as a lighthouse and weather station. On October 15, 1916, the Coast Guard Station was moved from its original location near the mouth of the river to what is now Depot Street adjacent to First Baptist Church. In 1933, a new building was built on Depot Street which served as the Headquarters for both the USCG and local auxiliary agencies. On May 8, 1934, Admiral James K. Polk announced that USCG would be merging with other US Federal agencies into one organization called “ Government of the United States Marine Corps” (USMC). As part of this reorganization process, Headquarters for both USCG and local auxiliary agencies were transferred from Depot Street to Camp Pendleton on August 16th. hereafter known as “UCLA” Annex #4 In 1941-1942 USS Constitution (CV-1) participated in World War II and lost her bowels during shakedown cruise off Southern California; however she still remained afloat and moored offshore until September 1945 when she decommissioned at Mare Island Naval Shipyard where she underwent an extensive restoration program before returning to service in 1947 as flagship of 1st Fleet On January 17th 1971 Headquarters USCG moved from UCLA Annex 4 back onto campus after 20 years absence From then until disbanding on September 15th 1978 HQ left behind many wonderful memories including dances at Enchanted Gardens popularly known as The Rose Garden

At that time the Coast Guard consisted of just a few men and their boat. In 1921 the first helicopter was purchased and used for training purposes only. In 1923 the first cutter, CG-2A was built at the Port of Los Angeles. This cutter remained in service until 1969 when she was sold to Japan and scrapped. In 1941, the USCG organized its own gift shop called "Gift Shop No 1" which operated out of barracks at Fort Irwin. This store became known as "The shop That Gave America The Navy SEALs" because it gave away military insignias, tools, clothing and other supplies to sailors stationed at Naval Base San Diego or NAS Fallon. Brigadier General George Custer's Column Veterans Day Parade on August 10th 1920 is one of the earliest events associated with the USCG in Auburn.

This was followed by another act in 1921 authorizing the purchase of 900 patrol boats. From 1921-1930, the Coast Guard purchased 181 catboats and 16 tugboats. In 1932, Congress passed an act that authorized the purchase of 300 icebreakers for use on coastal waterways. These purchases helped make our coastline more secure during times of weather conditions or emergency. In 1937, Congress passed another act authorizing the donation of 6 lifeboats to be used by the Coast Guardsmen on selected harbors around America. This Act also provided for a appropriation of $5 million for shore security measures and new buildings along our coastslines. In 1951, Congress amended the National Emergencies Act to create two newemergency areas: The Western Hemisphere Emergency Area (WHA) and The Eastern Hemisphere Emergency Area (EHA). These emergency areas were designed as regions where disaster could occur with significant impact on U.S citizens living within its boundaries . After studying potential disasters which could occur in these emergency areas, then-Secretary of Commerce James Byrnes determined that it would be necessary for theregulatory authorities available at all times should such an event happen outside Washington D C . Consequently, under section 601(a)of Public Law 73–568 (2 October 1973), Headquarters United States Customs Service became responsible for coordinating law enforcement activities within both EHAand WHAEA
