Auburn, California is a town in Butte County, California, located about 120 miles (193 km) northeast of Sacramento and about 240 miles (370 km) northwest of San Francisco. The population was 18,865 at the 2010 census. Auburn is the county seat for Butte County. It is also home to Auburn University, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. The site where Auburn now stands was first inhabited by Native Americans before European arrival. In 1807, James Folsom built a small cabin here on his ranch named Rancho de la Purisima which served as a stop on fur trader John C. Frémont's journey from Los Angeles to Beijing through what is now Fresno County and into central California. A year later, Folsom sold his holdings in Rancho de la Purisima to Adrian Sutter who established an adobe fort here called Fort Worth on January 6, 1809 under the name of Bear Valley Station.
