Auburn, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 26,549 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kern County after Bakersfield. The name Auburn comes from the Spanish word for "oak" (aureus). The first permanent English settlers in what is now Auburn were two brothers, John and Thomas Avery who arrived on horseback on October 14th 1848. They named their land "Avery's Valley". In 1851 they sold their holdings to James Fenton who then founded the City of Auburn and laid out the street grid that still exists today. In 1876, George Covington platted what is now downtown Auburn as a town limits area with a building limit of $5 per settler and an enrollment limit of 100 people. In 1886, when Marcus Daly bought much of present day Kern County from Mexican heirs he set up his Rancho El Conejo east of present day downtown Auburn for grazing and sheep farming operations which led to eventually developing this area into one of the most heavily populated areas in Southern California. The Mormons wanted to find a new home for their people after they were expelled from Nauvoo, Illinois. They settled down on the east side of the San Joaquin River and named their settlement Auburn after Dr. Thomas Moulton Caldwell, one of their leaders. Auburn quickly became a major center for business and education in the Central Valley. In 1871, it was renamed Fresno because Mayor George Eastman donated land to house the town’s first schoolhouse. By 1915, Auburn had become an important agricultural center with its own cotton gin and irrigation system. During World War II, Auburn was one of several locations in Northern California bombed by Japanese bombers during the war effort. The bombing continued into 1945 as Allied forces fought Japan over control of Asia Minor and Southern Mesopotamia. Many buildings that remain standing in Auburn today were destroyed during this time period including the old courthouse which still stands today at 319 S Main Street (now part of downtown).
