Auburn, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Auburn was founded in 1867 by James A. Pickering and John Brougham as a stop on the transcontinental Telegraph Line. Although not an incorporated town, it has been described as "the cultural capital of Central Valley" for its strong center-left Democratic political leanings since World War II; and for its large number of students and professionals who attend local universities such as UC Berkeley and Caltech. The first post office in Auburn opened in 1870. In 1906, the town's zip code was established at 90307. The first courthouse opened in 1912, following the construction of a new road from Fresno to central Auburn that bypassed downtown. In 1937, during World War II, Auburn became one of two towns within Fresno County to establish themselves as military bases (the other being Visalia). The county seat moved to Chico in 1948; however, military activity continued until 1956 when all but 1% of the county's residents were considered Japanese Americans because they were stationed at various wartime sites throughout California (outside Los Angeles County) under Japanese Control during World War II. On October 15th 1951 citizens voted overwhelmingly to abandon their affiliation with Chico and become an independent city called Auburn through petitioning process which began on November 4th 1951 ; thus becoming one of only two cities in California that did not follow longstanding community standards & regulations regarding incorporation/councils/zoning etc., continuing until present day!
