Auburn, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Napa-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn was founded in 1878 by James Sweeny and David Irvine as a wagon manufacturing center for the Central Valley region. A cotton gin was built in 1887 and it became one of the first general stores in Auburn when it opened its doors. The city's growth started slowly but steadily over the years; by 1950, Auburn had a population of 24,000 and had become one of the most important economic attractions in Kern County. In 1968, Fresno annexed Auburn to make up their municipal borders. AUBURN HISTORY James Sweeny founded Auburn on December 10th 1878 from land given to him by his father John Sweeny Sr.. The town grew quickly because wagon manufacturers needed access to good transportation for transporting goods to market and also because there were no other towns within driving distance for settlers to establish themselves. In 1850 James Sweeny erected a cotton gin at what is now known as Main Street which helped spur further development around town. By 1870s or so there were two hotels/motels (the First National Bank building and the old Masonic Temple) four stores (the Wagon Wheel Inn & Grain Mill building), three schoolhouses (one with an addition added soon after), two churches (Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1889 and Baptist Church built 1912), two factories (a foundry/steel mill closed down in 1910 while still running afoul of antitrust laws - this left some steel products available for local production until after World War II when competition from Japanese companies ended), three residences (two dwellings destroyed by fire during Prohibition days only – Mrs Gifford’s store was rebuilt not long afterwards), several businesses including one livery stable, post office (opened on November 12th 1877 by Elisha Moulton Hutchins), five agricultural businesses including a cowpasture operation run by George Witherspoon that produced hay and straw for local farmers as well as eggs from hens kept on strike at nearby Tehachapi Mineshaft Co., peach orchard operated by Capt Connery Bros., apple orchard operated by John Jansen which yielded about $200 per acre between 1903-1907; additional businesses established over time such as: gristmill(1891) connected direct with flour mills located throughout Northern California; winery(1914) acquired via purchase from Doheny Winery Cooperative; shoe store(1915) acquired via purchase from Lillie Hansen Shoe Store Company; insurance company(1920); auto parts store(1924); ice cream parlor(1959). Auburn, California was founded on December 12, 1853 by James W. Atherton and his brother John Atherton. The first post office in Auburn was established on February 17, 1854. The town of Auburn was platted on November 3, 1856 by the Athertons and named for their father James Atherton who had died in previous year. The first school in Auburn was started in a house at 320 North 4th Street on October 10, 1860. In 1865 the county seat of Alameda County was moved from Oakland to Auburn pursuant to an Act of Congress. In 1868 the town of Auburn passed an ordinance forbidding liquor sales within its limits. On May 6, 1870 the United States Supreme Court ruled that this ordinance violated the Constitution of the United States and ordered that it be repealed. In 1872 Generaldusty Sherman's army invaded California and destroyed most of what remained of Chinese civilization in Central Valley during his campaign against the Chinese Americans known as The Great White Allotment War or The Sacramento Rebellion which also led to increasing anti-Chinese sentiment across America due to events such as this one
