Avenal, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert located near Palm Springs. It was founded in 1911 by John Sutter and his brother, Manuel. The Avenal post office was established in 1912. In 1916, the townsite was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1978, Avenal became part of the city of Palm Springs. The Avenal Post Office building is a contributing property to the Town Square Shopping Center complex which includes a bank, hardware store, restaurant and movie theater. The building has been used as a schoolhouse since 1951.
Avenal was founded in 1853 by George Avenal and his brother, Lorenzo. The town was named for the Roman god of war, Aventinus.
