The history of the army in Avenal, California dates back to 1848. The first military unit in this town was the Third Battalion of California Volunteers. This battalion fought in the Mexican-American War and was disbanded in 1849. In 1861, two companies of soldiers from Avenal were called to serve in the Californian Civil War as part of the XXV Corps. These men were mustered into service on October 24 and served until November 9, 1861. The units that took part in this conflict are now considered defunct. Avenal's connection with the military goes back even further than that. In 1847, General Pershing organized an artillery detachment called the Second Battalion of California Volunteers at this town. This battalion served under Major General John Sutter during the Gold Rush period and also participated in various campaigns against Native Americans throughout southern California. After hostilities ended, these veterans returned home and formed a new battalion known as Company H (Horseback Squadron) on December 5, 1848. This company was disbanded on May 4, 1850 due to lack of volunteers for its replacement unit (the First Battalion). The first permanent settlement in what is now Avenal occurred around 1840 when white prospectors discovered gold near present-day Avenal Avenue and Adobe Road. A small community developed around these miners while they searched for gold; however, no permanent structures were constructed until after 1851 when a post office was established at Adobe Road/Alameda Street and Pacific Highway). The discovery of silver led to increased activity around here; therefore, businesses grew up catering to both miners and people looking for silverRush assets such as coins or jewelry . ADA was founded June 12th 1919 following Armistice Day celebrations celebrating peace between America’s allies Great Britain and France who had finally severed all ties with Germany 2 days prior1) Captain Bidwell played an important role early on during WWI when his commandantate sailed into French Polynesia waters carrying supplies for American Expeditionary Force fighting Japan2) He then returned home only weeks after hostilities ceased bringing news back about how much damage Japanese forces had done along US coastline3) With hindsight we can see howCaptain Bidwell's actions not only helped support Allies but also opened doorwaysfor future diplomacy4), Today many commemoration ceremonies are held annually recognizingCaptain Bidwell's seminal role during WWII5))
