The Avenal Coast Guard Station was built in 1935 by the California State Highway Patrol. It replaced an earlier station on the same site. The Coast Guard Station is a National Historic Landmark and is used for law enforcement purposes as well as providing basic services to the community. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station began providing EMS service to the community. In 1984, a new hangar was built to store and support equipment. In 1998, a new fire station was built and it serves as the primary facility for local firefighting needs. Since its inception, Avenal Coast Guard Station has played an important role in protecting our coastline and helping keep our community safe. The Avenal Coast Guard Station was established on October 1, 1928. It was under the jurisdiction of the San Francisco Bay Defense District. The station consisted of a Headquarters and four patrol boats. The patrol boats were replaced by the present Coast Guard boat fleet in 1951. In 1978, the station was merged with the nearby Monterey County Sheriff's Department to form one unified command.
Avenal is a small town located in the East Bay Regional Park District of Contra Costa County, California. The population was 1,436 at the 2010 census. Avenal is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward area and is adjacent to Berkeley and Hayward. Avenal began as an agricultural community on the east side of Maxwell Creek which flowed through what is now Avenal Heights. In 1853, A&P Store owner James Valentine built a grocery store on Second Street in what is now downtown Avenal. In 1888, Leland Stanford Jr., son of Stanford University president Leland Stanford Sr., bought 672 acres (248 hectares) of land along Maxwell Creek from John Sutter for $6,000. In 1892 he built a home called Laurel Grove which became known as "the Castle" because it sat atop a hill overlooking Avenal and Maxwell Creek. The first post office in Avenal was established on February 19, 1893 by Jno Crain with the name "Valentine". It moved to its present location on Main Street in 1907 after being buffeted by several other sites selected by local voters. By 1912 there were six churches in town with two schools: one public and one private; 11 businesses including four groceries; two banks; three restaurants; two barber shops; one printing shop; one millinery shop and one dentist office. In 1916 Donald Wirtz took over management of the post office and renamed it "Avenal". The population had grown to 2,500 when World War II began but declined during the war due to lack of food production opportunities following World War I's depression. At the end of hostilities 1945, most residents returned to their pre-war levels although some continued to live intown until 1949 when they annexed parts of Hayward reducing their pop
The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and rescue services on the American mainland since 1898. This small boat was originally designed to allow officers to reach high-risk areas if necessary. It also served as a transportation vehicle for passengers and crew. Avenal is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mono Lake area. Avenal has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and first appears on historical maps in 1847. The name "Avenel" comes from the French word "avenir", meaning to rise above or succeed. The first post office in Avenal was established in 1852, and was called Quanahville. The current post office was built in 1923 and has been renamed Avenal after its founder, Hosea Allen Avenal Jr.. In 1858 an adobe building now used as a private school caught fire and burned down; this event is commemorated by a monument to firefighters that stands outside the present schoolhouse. Avenal had a sawmill until 1898 when it closed due to competition from larger mills near Yosemite National Park. There were also cattle ranches here until about 1930 when they were acquired by the Mono Lake Water District which still owns them today. Most of these holdings have since been sold off to various entities including citrus production beginning in 1945 by Jumbo oranges operations within Monogram Citrus Company Incorporated (MOCI) . After World War II there was an increase of people moving into rural areas due to new opportunities for jobs following the end of World War II and new technologies such as television and refrigeration making farming more efficient; however, much like many other rural communities throughout America during this time period large portions of Avenal's acreage were left unincorporated through lack of interest or opportunity among local landowners/ Developers alike Although there are scattered references to potential settlement along major roads leading into town during this time period there is no documentary evidence that any such settlements ever came about This continued apathy towards what would become one of America’s most vibrant agricultural towns can be partially attributed to its location gateway on Route 66 which made it easy for people coming from all over Northeast California access what was once just a few miles away
