Avenal is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. Avenal is part of the Fresno–Visalia-Madera combined statistical area. It is also included in the larger Central Valley region. The first people to live in what is now Avenal were some of the Ohlone people who came to central California in search of new land to farm after their traditional territory was destroyed by Native Americans. In 1847, Jens Jensen and his brother-in-law Rasmussen discovered gold near present day Avenal and began prospecting for ore here. In 1849, John C. Frémont mined gold near present day Avenal and started transport southward for delivery to Stockton so that it could be smelted down into coins form[1]. The early residents of Avenal were Danish immigrants mentioned by Drury as early as 1851 when he wrote his history of Kern County: "In that year (1851) there came into this county several score or more persons from Denmark… These friendly aliens induced many others to follow them, until a very large number had settled upon these parts." Avenal post office opened on February 17, 1865,[2] and remained open until it closed on July 15, 1966.[3] The first store in Avenal was built by Ephraim Henson in 1872[4], although there are no records documenting its opening date or ownership. A store building still stands today along Main Street which served as a grocery starting in 1903 before becoming an auto dealership later that decade. By 1913 there were nine businesses operating within one block; all but two continue operation today except for one which has been replaced by a home since then[5]. Avenal voters voted on November 3rd, 1922 not to seat any members of the United States Congress due to local fatigue following World War I and instead electing Jameson Dyson who would serve until 1949[6]. One local resident did manage make it onto Capitol Hill though – Melvin Laird served three terms as mayor from 1951-1957 with limited authority due largely to term limits set forth by then Governor Earl Warren.[7] On October 9th 1954 Congressman Don Briscoe announced plans for an interstate road through central California northward from Bakersfield through downtown Fresno then upriver past Atascadero before terminating at Promontory Point National Monument; however this proposal met fierce resistance both locally and nationally due primarily to fears over potential jobs lost should such a route pass through town[8][9][10].
