Avenal was founded in 1887 by George W. Parish and named for General James K. Polk of the Union Army. The first post office in Avenal opened on May 10, 1888, and served until October 1, 1889. The first settler in what is now Avenal was George W. Parish who arrived with his family from Illinois on July 10th, 1887. Parrish's father had also settled in Mono County some years earlier and had brought over his seed with him to start a new life west of Stonington (now Bakersfield). Avenal began as an agricultural center due to its location along the Gila River which facilitated irrigation farming and water transportation for local farmers and ranchers such as Pemberton & Company who operated a sawmill and gristmill hereabouts from the mid-1890s until their sale to Jervis Electric Light Company in 1916; it remained an important economic engine through most of the 20th century until other more developed interests took control during the Great Depression when production declined precipitously. Avenal is a small town in the Sacramento Valley, California, United States. It is part of the Kern County seat of Bakersfield. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. Avenal was founded in 1867 by George Ransom and named for General Anthony Wayne, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then been elected as a Democrat to Congress from California. The first post office at Avenal was established on February 20, 1868. The first settler to arrive in what is now Avenal was John Davenport on January 9, 1870. The town grew rapidly due to the arrival of various farmers and miners during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1915, an agreement was made between local farmers and ranchers to lease land that adjoined their grazing areas for housing development; this area became known as "Rancho Venalo". After World War II ended with Victory in Europe over Nazi Germany, many industry workers came into Avenal looking for work opportunities; this led to increased population growth which culminated in 2000 when it passed 3 percent of its 1969 population figure. Avenal has seen several changes over time: its incorporation into Kern County in 1959; its conversion from agriculture to manufacturing after 1964; high levels of immigration beginning around 1990 with Hispanics making up 50 percent of residents by 2000; decline following a recession starting in 2007-2008 followed by an increase until 2013 when it reached 4 percent of its 2009 population figure; current low levels mostly attributable to economic downturns throughout most of 2016 including a loss of 1 percent from 2016 total population
