In 1887, Avenal residents James and Annie Lynch started a small coffee shop on the corner of 2nd and Market Streets. The couple opened their first shop in what is now the old Courtyard at First Baptist Church. In 1895, they became the first business to open in what is now Avenal Plaza. They continued to operate their business until 1902 when they sold it to Harry Nail who renamed it Nail's Coffee Shop. In 1912, Nail moved his store to 9th Street and Ivar Pincus took over as the store's manager. In 1928, Pincus sold his business to Charles Arnott who operated it until 1984. In 1984, Joe Kaldi purchased Nail's Coffee Shop from Arnott and reopened it as Joe's Coffee Shop with an emphasis on quality roasted beans. The shop has been running ever since.
Avenal, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. Avenal is included in the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin County metropolitan area. It is part of the larger Central Valley region and experiences a hot, dry summer climate. Avenal was founded in 1852 by Asahel and Lucy White as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Madera. The first post office was established in 1853. The name Avenal has been variously anglicized to Averill, Avila, Avellaneda and Avilla. Avenal is located at (36.799662,-117.469859). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Avenal lies on two main valleys within which are three other smaller valleys: East Valley, West Valley and South Valley. These valleys form an east-west trending saltation belt that runs about 25 miles long from north to south with elevations ranging from about 6500 feet near West Valley to over 11000 feet near East Valley City limits where it ends at Mount Shasta National Monument complex.). North of here there are extensive agricultural valleys while downriver lie urban areas such as Fresno and Madera - both of which have grown significantly since Avenal's founding in 1852 despite its small size relative to these larger metropolitan areas."

Avenal is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1887 by John G. Avenal and his wife, Emma L. The town is named after an Italian general, Antonio Santa Anna, who fought in the Mexican-American War. Avenal has a population of about 3,000 people today and is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Avenal was first settled by Native Americans who hunted buffalos and other game in the area now known as Avenal Canyon. In 1847, Spanish traders discovered gold near present-day Avenal and began to explore the region further. They found payable deposits of gold at various sites around present-day Avenal but did not build any settlements because they were unsure how to get hold of the valuable metal. In 1857, Manuel Michelin visited the area and reported finding rich veins of silver nearby which led to development of this area as a mining district. In 1862, Johan Sverdrup established what is now called Sverdrup's Mills on Dam Rd., just east of today's Avenal Elementary School boundary line. This mill produced flour for local markets and also turned out bricks for buildings in downtown Avenal until it closed its doors in 1971 due to competition from new mills set up along I-5 corridor closer to Fresno city limits). In 1886 John Gaudreau arrived from Illinois with his family to take up homesteading opportunities around present day Avenal Creek Road northeast of town center; he named his holdings "Avenel". The following year saw an influx of settlers when George Wickersham platted what is now known as Wickersham Ranch east of town on land that had been given him by his father-in-law James Hutton (the founder and first headmaster at Stonington School). By 1890 there were over 100 residents living in existences scattered throughout some 26 miles²²²²½ mile²²²³ mile²¼mile²¶ miles¸ miles) west border side (east side including present day Crescent City)of what would later become central valley; many lived within one half mile (one kilometer) or less of their current location I n 1893 James Aiken purchased 4 acres north/northwest corner lot Kendall Park Block #1 from original homesteader Abelardo Ramos de la Torre y Aranda for $800USD - thus doubling size & improving accessibility - & erected home soon thereafter becoming one Mr Aiken’s many assets & interests hereabouts! From humble beginnings (& thru hard work!) Aiken built successful grocery store (& dairy), schoolhouse (& post office), three residences—all still extant: one Victorian Revival style brick building (#2), two ½ story wood frame buildings (#3), Second Empire style metalclad building (#4)—now privatelyowned—& numerous farm tools thruout business heyday! Many friends made here during early 20th century thruout entire Central Valley!" The early years were difficult for locals due to lack of resources and transportation options outside Fresno County proper . However John Gaudreau persevered with starting a grocery store that became very successful . He kept expanding his business even though it was challenging due to lack infrastructure at that time
