When Avenal first settled in the area it was under Spanish rule. The land that now includes Avenal was bought by Juan Crespo in 1769. In 1851, the United States acquired California from Mexico and placed it within the new country. Avenal became part of what is now El Paso County, Texas. The first time coffee was grown at Avenal was in 1865 when Wm Hocking started a small farm near the present day intersection of Hwy 101 and Pkwy 11. Mr. Hocking operated a small espresso business out of his home for about two years until he decided to sell his beans to an American named Edward Rector who lived in nearby La Jolla. On February 10th, 1868, Captain John Brougham and His expedition set off on their so-called "California Expedition" with 50 men including three Americans, 13 Mexicans (including 7 brothers), eight horses and six mules carrying crates of beans sacks filled with ground coffee beans from Panama City, Honduras and Puerto Rico. After spending two weeks reaching Socorro Island they sailed back across the Pacific Ocean without tasting any coffee while passing through some very stormy conditions on their way back to San Francisco Bay Captain Brougham's objective was to explore this newly discovered continent and determine whether or not there might be lands further north where coffee could be grown commercially . Unfortunately for Captain Brougham, he never reached his destination due to bad weather which delayed them by many weeks as well as causing them great expenseome accommodations while on their passage. While Captain Brougham's journey may have been fruitless, it did serve as a prelude to future expeditions that would discovery new areas of America where coffee could be grown commercially . The supplies used by these later expeditions were likely brought overland via Central America since no such explorer had gone that route before captain Brougham happened upon it during his travels

Today, Avenal remains an agricultural center with cattle ranching providing much of its revenue stream. Manufacturing also continues to play a role with several businesses including two fabrication mills (one now closed) and three leather factories active throughout the decade 2000-2010. In recent years, Avenal has seen strong growth in both its economy and social indicators thanks to numerous initiatives designed to bring economic development and revitalization along with increased access to education opportunities for local residents as well as support from key partners like the City of Bakersfield and AECOM USA – one of America's leading engineering firms – which has made many strategic investments totaling more than $100 million over 10 years into downtown redevelopment project that will create 1,000 jobs across various sectors including healthcare, information technology and manufacturing while preserving some traditional industrial heritage
