Avenal, California is home to the United States Military Academy and an active duty military presence dating back to WWII. The town has been hosting ceremonies and events honoring military deployed gifts for over 50 years. Avenal is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located on the east side of the central valley. Avenal was founded in 1865 by Don Carlos Avenal and his wife María de la Cruz. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. In 1868, Don Carlos avenaled twelve acres (5 hectares) of land grant from Governor Maximiano Guerrero to establish a town site on what is now the eastern edge of Avenal. He named it after Saint Augustine, one of his patron saints. In 1870, Avenal had a population of about fifty people and six businesses. Avenue A ran west to east until 1938 when fire destroyed most of the downtown business district. The original blvd crossing near current day Union Station used to be called "Avenue S" or "Hwy 99" before it was renamed "Alameda Street". Today's Boulevard A is also renamed after María de la Cruz Avenal which helped develop this small town into what it is today. Avenal has been an agricultural community for many years with crops such as cotton, corn and hay being grown along with several dairy farms and some almond orchards over time.

Avenal, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Avenal is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his unit of the Seventh Cavalry during the American Civil War. The first Europeans to visit what is now Avenal were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They called it Santiago de los Caballeros because of its resemblance to their Spanish god Santiago. In 1821, Mexican landowners bought the Rancho San Miguel from José Joaquin Moraga for $1,000. The Moragas ran the ranch until they sold it in 1848 to John Sutter for $10,000. In 1859, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Avenal while mining at Yozma Creek. James Wolk built a cabin on a rise overlooking Yozma Creek in 1860 and began operating an adobe mill that produced flour and other goods until 1865 when he moved to Sacramento and started another flour company there. In 1862, local resident Lorenzo Martinez founded the First Christian Church in Avenal with donations from friends and family members of Martinez himself. The church served as a community center until 1900 when it was destroyed by fire due to vandalism by students attending school nearby. Avenal's post office opened on October 10, 1861 (the date of Californias admission into statehood). It closed on July 14th 1966 due to lack of mail traffic from the small town during wartime measures related to national security concerns associated with America's entry into World War II .

In 1892, the county seat moved from Chico to Avenal after Chico City withdrew its charter due to financial problems. A new courthouse was built on State Route 601 near Third Street in 1907-1908; it burned down in 1931.
