The National Guard in Avenal, California originated as the "Chinese Militia" on November 10, 1846. The Chinese militia was organized to protect the citizens of San Francisco from Native Americans and Mexican encroachment. The Chino militia lasted until 1848 when it was disbanded due to lack of volunteers. Avenal's first national guard unit was organized on December 1, 1861 under the command of Captain John B. Geary. At this time, the town had a population of only 100 people and no military equipment or troops available to provide security for the community. On February 9, 1862, Captain Geary requested andreceived approval from President Abraham Lincoln to form a company of twelve soldiers with cannons and armor at Avenal Depot for service in California during the American Civil War. The first enlistment occurred on March 7th with Captain Geary as captain and Colonel James Worthy as lieutenant colonel. With help from local farmers and miners who donated clothing, arms and horses, by 1863 the town had erected two companies of men pursuant to Lieutenant Colonel Worthy's recommendation that they form an artillery battalion in order to provide fire support for Union forces marching through these hillsides during their campaigns against General Robert E Lee in Virginia . With its new armament including four guns each mounted on two wagons drawn by six horses each, this battalion served successfully throughout most of 1863-1864 before being shipment back home after Confederate victory at Gettysburg on July 12th1865

Fremont and his brother-in-law, George Wickersham, who had come from nearby Winchester, California. The name "Avenal" comes from the Spanish word "avenida", meaning alley or path. In 1902, Avenal became part of the City of Los Angeles through annexation by LA. In 1904 it was merged into the newly created city of West Hollywood; in 1912 it became a separate city again with its own police force and mayoralty under Mayor Edward Logue until it merged back into West Hollywood in 1922. Avenal is located on Forest Service land near Interstate 5 and US 101 east of downtown Los Angeles. A narrow dirt road leads to the town from I-5 just north of Mulholland Drive; there are no public transportation options within or outside Avenal itself other than walking or biking to local businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels).
