The Avenal Naval Air Station was a training and operational facility for the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945. The station was also known as NAS San Diego until it became NAS Avenal in 1942. It served as a Naval air station in California and Nevada during World War II, and again from 1951 to 1955 when it merged with NAS Fallon, Nevada. After the war, NAS Avenal operated as an Air Force base until it closed in 1979.

Avenal is bordered by Porterville to the east, San Bernardino to the south, and Claremont to the west. Avenal is also adjacent to lakes Arrowhead and John Muir National Park. The town grew rapidly due to its location and accessibility to transportation including stagecoaches, wagons and handcarts. By 1886, Avenal had a population of 2,000 residents and was incorporated as a city under the name of Sacramento. The city's growth halted during World War I due to lack of resources while it thrived during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and industry. After the war, Avenal struggled economically but slowly recovered thanks in part to strong government support which included an urban renewal program that removed many rundown buildings and replaced them with new structures such as senior centers, libraries, schools and hospitals. Today, Avenal is one of Northern California's most vibrant cities with a rich history that has been preserved through museums, art galleries and recognition from both state and federal governments
