In 2006-2007 Avenal had its first ever golf tournament which attracted over 100 participants from around Kern County

Avenal is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. Avenal was founded in 1861 by John C. Frémont and his wife Eliza Jane Babcock. The community is named for General Anthony Wayne Avenal, who fought in the Mexican-American War and U.S. Civil War. Avenal has a population of about 1,700 people as of 2010. Avenal was one of ten communities that were founded along the Donner Trail during the Gold Rush era in 1848. The surviving towns became part of Fresno County when it was organized in 1850. In 1872, Fresno County merged with other counties to form Kings County, which included parts of what are now Orange and Kern counties. In 1870, a post office called Avenal was established at the junction of State Route 190 and State Route 248 on the east side of the San Joaquin River east of Bakersfield. It was operated by the US Mail from May 10, 1870 through November 15, 1871; by First Western Pacific Railroad from December 8, 1870 through May 5, 1871; by Stagecoach Line from June 17th through October 14th 1870; and by stage coach from October 15th 1870 until its closure on July 2nd 1886 due to horse fever among mail riders traveling between Sacramento and Stockton NJR (now Bay Area Rapid Transit). The first settler to live in present-day Avenal was Wm Halsey on February 6th 1861 after he arrived from Sonoma County via wagon train overland from Oakland Airport near Daly City with his family including three daughters born during his original visit there on January 25th 1860 while he still served as an army lieutenant colonel stationed at Fort Tejon northwest of San Francisco under Major General Manuel Micheltorena with operations code name "Cimarron". His daughter Eliza Jane Halsey married John Copley Frémont II on April 3rd 1865 at Stinson's Ranch northeast of Redding where they had been living since their arrival westward several weeks earlier following their passage downriver aboard Lieutenant Colonel Fremont's flagship USS Constitution which carried them all across Soda Creek into Mono Lake before finally reaching Portolà on September 12th 1863 where they disembarked for winter encampment prior to sailing upriver again sometime later that year accompanied by their two younger sisters Nella or Nancy (born December 12th 1862) and Harriot or Harriett (born October 16th 1863), both under age twelve at the time but soon old enough to ride horses themselves accompanying their father as he led military reconnaissance patrols throughout central California northward into Nevada Territory during late 1862 before finally being discharged from service near Carson City December 1st 1865 having accomplished 9 months active duty including service overland march/traveling southbound along Donner Pass corridor en route to eventually becoming captain general & senior military advisor to Ulysses S Grant upon his inauguration as President January 4TH 1866 replacing General Philip Sheridan who had been commander-in-chief up until then overseeing military operations leading up TO & INCLUDING THE AMERICAN MASSACRE OF CHIHUAHUA ON APRIL 14TH 1865 - thus becoming just one amongst many high ranking Californians directly involved in events leading up TO & INCLUDING THE LOS ANGELES FIRE OF EARLY JULY 1865 - making him practically contemporary even unto today with most Americans only knowing very limited details about this key historical figure locally known simply as "The Governor"
