The United States Air Force deployed gift history to Azusa, California in 1951. The gift history program was initiated by Colonel Curtis E. LeMay, Jr., Commander of the First Tactical Fighter Wing at Kelly Air Force Base. Lieutenant General James K. Arnold, Commanding General of the Ninth Air Force in Europe, requested that the United States Military Forces stationed there provide presents for members of the civilian population in order to help morale and support military operations. Colonel LeMay agreed to participate in the gift history program and organized a group of officers and enlisted personnel who would deliver gifts to civilians on Christmas Eve. This event is known as "Gift History Day". The purpose of this event was twofold: To encourage people to maintain good relations with their military neighbors and also to provide some much-needed funds and goods to local families during holiday season. Since its inception, Gift History Day has been an important part of United States military culture and it continues today as a way for servicemen and women from all overthe USMCto show their appreciation for service rendered. In recent years, Gift History Day has also evolved into an opportunity for servicemen and women from different branches of the military to exchange unique experiences or tips about how they have managed difficult relationships with fellow service members. Air Force Deployed Gift The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to friends, family, and allies in support of military operations. From the humble gift of cigarettes to more complex items like fighter jets or missiles, the USAF has a wide variety of offerings that can be appreciated by those who appreciate them. On Dec. 15, 1948, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Azusa, California in commemoration of the city's role in World War II. The gift was an air force fighter plane named the "P-51 Mustang."
Azusa is a small, rural town in California that has been in existence since 1876. The population of Azusa was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Barbara County line, about 26 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The name "Azusa" comes from the Chumash word "za-nu-a," meaning place of fresh water. The first European to visit this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 15, 1542. A year later, Gaspar de Portolà visited and named this region Nueva Vizcaya after his recent discovery of new land off the coast of California. Spanish missionaries began coming to this area in greater numbers starting in 1769 and by 1821 it had become part of Alta California under Mexican rule. In 1876, Azusa became part of Anglo America when it was incorporated as a city within the newly created Los Angeles County. The town's growth came slowly but steadily over time due to itsisolated location and lack of transportation options outside Los Angeles County for residents. By 1990, however, Azusa had grown to an estimated population of 29,000 people with a wealth of cultural resources and history tucked away inside its tight-knit community. Azusa, California is a city in and the county seat of Santa Clara County, California. The population was 108,171 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and has been traditionally known for its agricultural products such as grapes, apples, wine, and almonds.Azusa's rich history began with early Spanish explorers who named it Nueva Vizcaya (New Wasilla). A mission founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1769 called San Francisco de Asís was located here. In 1821 Mexican troops burned down the mission to prevent American missionaries from taking over. Californios establish local governmental institutions including a school district and jail in 1824.The first post office opened in Azusa on December 1, 1826. The name "Azusa" originated with Juan Bautista Alvarado who settled at present-day route 41st Street and Mission Avenue on October 24th of that year after his arrival from New Mexico Territory..A new courthouse was built in 1830 using convict labor but it burned down within six months due to fire next door. Azusa became an independent town upon incorporation on January 24th of 1850 under the name of Villahermosa de la Montaña or Valley of the Mountain Hermitage because many settlers came from nearby mountain ranges seeking religious solace during this time period..In 1863 Azusa played host to both President Abraham Lincoln's second inauguration ceremonies as well as General Ulysses S Grant's funeral procession through town streets after his death at Bull Run battlefield near Petersburg Virginia.. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II with the erection of thousands of housing units and businesses along Route 101 which bisected downtown until it was demolished in 1967 when Interstate 10 bypassed Santa Clara County entirely. During its heyday Azusa boasted more than 100 thriving businesses including a Tiffany’s store and two banks – First National Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) which opened its doors on September 16th 1951 followed by Jardine Paper Products Co., Incorporated (later JardineHancock) on November 15th 1953 which became one of North America’s largest paper companies catering to military bases throughout Asia Pacific before merging into Hormel Foods Company in 1979..Many famous residents include Jack Kemp (politician), Kirk Douglas (actor), Sonny Bono (singer/songwriter/drummer for Band Aid), Beverly Garland (actress/ singer), DonatellO Salvatore Ferragamo & His Sons Shoes Ltd., Dr Pepper Snapple Group et al….The 1990s saw an influx of Japanese people fleeing Japan during the economic recession while other new arrivals included Latinos fleeing Central American dictatorships etc…..Azusa remains a vibrant community with active civic organizations such as El Centro Histórico de Arte y Cultura e Izquierda Mexicana; United Asian American Chamber Of Commerce; Chicano Studies Association; Latino Business League; Negro Arts Coalition etc….azusacountygov website
On October 1, 1887, the Azusa Pacific University was founded in Azusa, California. The school's first president, Samuel Morse Parsons, donated land for the university and it received its charter from the State of California on November 6. The first students enrolling at APU were women who had been refused admission to other universities due to their gender.
