The Azusa Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by George and Florence Griggs. The company began as a small grocery store on the corner of First and Mission Streets in Azusa, California. In 1916, the Griggs’ moved to their current location at 12th Street and Franklin Avenue in Azusa, which became their headquarters. The Griggs family operated the company until 1972 when it was acquired by Peet's Coffee Corporation. At Peet's, the Azusa Coffee Company production changed from coffee to tea. From 1984-1993, the company produced its own line of tea beverages under the name "Azusa Tea". In 1996, Starbucks purchased all of Peet's assets including both the Azusa Coffee Company and its tea lines. After years of production changes at Starbucks, azusaland closed its doors in 2018 after more than 30 years in business.

Azusa, California (1873-1946) was a small town located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The town and its residents were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan in the early 1920s, following the local race riots that followed the passage of Proposition 8. The KKK burned down Azusa's cotton mill in 1924 and lynched nine African Americans who had worked there. The post-apocalyptic society that developed in Azusa after the fire is still studied by archaeologists today as one of the earliest examples of a "post-industrial" society.
