The Coast Guard in Azusa, California has been providing service to the community since 1933. The Coast Guard Station in Azusa was established on Dec. 15, 1933 under the command of Captain John B. Purdy. The first officer on duty was First Class Charles W. McGeehan with a complement of 2 officers and 24 enlisted men. In 1951, Captain Harry Tilden took command and added 1 officer and 36 enlisted men to his station’s complement. In 1961,Captain William Kiefer assumed command of the Coast Guard Station in Azusa and increased the size of the detachment from 24 to 48 officers and 314 enlisted men. In 1984,Captain Michael Jahn became the first Chief Petty Officer at Headquarters CGSCA when he assumed command from Captain Harry Tilden who had served as acting Commandant for 3 months due to illness. At this time,the CGSCA consisted of 6 detachments which comprised 1 base unit numbering 114 Enlisted Men; 5 Marine Unit numbers; 8 Helicopter Squadron Numbers (HSNs) each with up to 16 helicopters; an Aviation Detachment numbering 25 Officers); a Maritime Patrol Unit numbering 10 Officers) & A Reserve detachment numbered 21 Officers). In 1991-1992 Commodore Rickie Cavanaugh commanded Coast Guard Squadron One (Hazardous Material Response Squadron ONE) during Operation Coral Sea which saw Operation Neptune Spear conducted off Southern California beaches including Dana Point National Seashore where Japanese forces bombed Umatilla Island killing more than 100 American servicemen including 17 Marines & 2 Navy sailors- marking one of America’s bloodiest military engagements in World War II In 1993-1994 Commodore Rickie Cavanaugh commanded Coast Guard Squadron Two (Search and Rescue Squadrons TWO AND THREE) duringOperation grounded aircraft carrier USS Enterprise while she transited through San Francisco Bay - this marked only the second time an Aircraft Carrier has visited San Francisco Bay having done so previously during World War II In 1995-1996 Commodore Rickie Cavanaugh commanded Coastal Guardsman Battalion One Hundred Nine along side other Federal agencies participating in “Wetlands Great Lakes Task Force” which oppose Lake Superior Killifredeen River Management District Plan Submitted by State Of Minnesota pursuant To Minnesota Statute No 53B On December 12th 2001 Rear Admiral Tom Fenton assumed command over CGSCA following retirement of Commodore Rickie Cavanaugh effective November 30th 2001 Today there are 108 units subordinate or associated with HeadquartersCGSCA divided into 6 Commands: Brigades/Departments: 11 Sections: 204 Personnel: 930 people total

The Azusa Coast Guard Station was founded in 1912 by Captain John W. Houghton, who served as the first Chief of the Coast Guard Station at Huntington Beach. The station became a part of the California Department of Public Safety in 1928 and was renamed the Azusa Coast Guard Station on November 1, 1951. On July 16, 1984, the station was closed due to budget cuts and reopened as a detention center for illegal aliens. The detention center closed on January 25, 1997 and was replaced by the Border Patrol Station at nearby Foothill Boulevard.
What is Azusa, California? Azusa is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name "Azusa" means "place of the figs." The first Europeans to visit what are now Azusa and nearby areas were fur traders working for the Mission Santa Ana de Juarez in 1821. They named the area after St. Augustine of Hippo's Cathedral in Seville, Spain. In 1887, an act of Congress designated part of San Bernardino County as Azusa National Forest. The city started as a small station on the Southern Pacific Railroad line between El Paso and Chico. It became a town on December 6, 1912 when it was merged with other towns along that railroad line including Dayton and Winchester to form one municipality called Azusa Township (now part of Pomona). On October 15th 1914, by an act of the State legislature, all but two square miles (less than half a mile) of what is now downtownAzusa were added to Pomona City Limits creating what we know today as Downtown Azusa Historic District. In 1924, parts of what are now east Pasadena and west Orange began being developed into single-family homes by Antoni Preciado who built many such homes in that area following his purchase of Rancho Cucamonga from Mexican landowner Manuel Nieto in 1923; this land later became Anaheim Hills which was incorporated into Anaheim City limits on February 14th 1959. On July 17th 1949 azusacitizenhoodbeganamendmenttothestate Constitution via Proposition 13 becoming one political subdivision within Anaheim boundaries with all other city and county subdivisions automatically changing status upon adoption or denial thereof no matter how long it had been IN effect prior thereto
