Azusa is located on State Route 101 and is adjacent to Pasadena, which has a population of 1,911,334. The first Europeans to visit what is now Azusa were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. Jesuit Father Junípero Serra founded a mission here in 1792 after traveling through what is now Los Angeles County. The mission was abandoned by 1802 and its land became part of Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican Missions National Monument administered by the US Forest Service from 1916 until it was sold to the City of Azusa in 1959. In 1853–54, James Mott built his "Mountain View" house on top of Mount SB&N about two miles east of present-day downtown Azusa. In 1884–85 John Muir visited this location and made sketches for his book " Yosemite: A Topographical Survey". Muir's house still stands today on Mtn View Rd., southwest of downtown Azusa. On July 14th 1898 two men representing the United States Exploring Expedition (USE) set out from Sacramento aboard USS "Natchez" as part of an American exploration expedition commanded by Rear Admiral George Dewey during the Spanish–American War. They reached Point Loma near what is now Westwood Village before descending into San Diego Bay where they anchored off shore and explored various points around Point Loma before sailing back home on September 2nd 1898 with Lieutenant Harry Emerson Walsingham as acting captain under Rear Admiral John Jervis Gantt commanding local forces participated in these explorations that helped lay down international law forbidding Spain from meddling in America's internal affairs while also exploring various coasts including Southern California The first post office opened in honor of James Mott on October 25th 1899 when Pueblo mail order company Postmaster General Augustus Woodward delivered $2 postage stamps honoringMott at his Mountain View House . The history of Azusa can be traced back to 1887 when two men named George Hinton and Jesse Livermore founded what would become known as Hinton-Livermore Agricultural Company on the banks of the Santa Clara River. The company did well during its early years but it was not until 1915 when it merged with another agricultural company called Alameda Valley Corporation to form what would become known as Central Pacific Railroad (CPR). CPR quickly developed a rail line connecting San Francisco with Industry, thereby increasing access to farmland around Los Angeles. This increased demand for food led to increased production by CPR which also led to new jobs for locals who helped out with planting crops and building tracks. During World War I, Azusa played an important role in supplying Los Angeles with military supplies; much like other cities within range of war theaters such as Berkeley or Oakland. In order to do so, CPR built a railroad line between San Fernando Valley and Long Beach which allowed for easy shipment across country into Southern California during wartime times. Additionally, because Railroads were often seen as symbols of national power during these times there was significant interest in having them expand westward into newly annexed areas like Orange County; this happened after US Army General John Pershing ordered his soldiers into those areas following their victory over Mexico City at Chapultepec Park in 1916.
