Azusa is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 33,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Azusa were the Ohlone Native Americans who called it "Nu’alii". In 1846, Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down a small Indian village on the current site of Azusa Creek because they felt that its people were supporting American interests in Mexico. A group of Spanish colonists from Monterey founded a mission and Presidio here in 1847 after finding evidence that some of the natives were aiding Mexicans during the Mexican Revolution. The Californios used this location as an artillery target for practice during their war with Mexico. In 1853, gold was found atop Mount Wilson by prospectors working for John Wesley Harding and others in connection with wagon roadbuilding between Sacramento and Yuma City; this led to an increased demand for land around Monterey Bay and made Azusa one of the most important towns in southern California.
