The National Guard of Azusa, California was organized on December 6, 1907. The first members of the Guard were Captain John Fenton and Sergeant James O'Brien. Lieutenant Colonel George H. Jepson assumed command on January 1, 1908. On February 15, 1913 an act was passed by the state legislature which provided for the organization of a regiment of cavalry in order to protect agricultural interests in the county and also to provide transportation for farmers to markets. On May 12, 1914 an act was passed providing that all members of the militia be mustered out within one year after their enlistment had expired or until they had served two years as substitutes in any branch of the military or as guardsmen in any public building while on duty; that no one be enlisted who could not read or write; and that every person so mustered out receive a certificate from the mayor setting forth his reasons for being discharged. On October 3, 1916 an act was passed providing for incorporation into this regiment friendly fire control unit with training at Muroc Arsenal near Pasadena under command of Major Harry Ahern commanding officer United States Signal Corps squadron No. 515th Aero Squadron flying RFC biplanes equipped with machine guns and bombs during World War I when enemy fighter planes attacked our forces engaged in bombing raids over Orange County; that this unit be known as Company C (National Guard)Azusa California Regimental Association . On November 16 1916 an act was passed authorizing member company commanders to raise money for war funds by selling candy bars to individuals at local businesses along with other forms of advertising through posters placed around town; that number six companies raised $2,830 which was used towards munitions supplies needed by troops fighting in Europe In 1917 there were some changes taking place within the Guardsmen nazi party control enterprising drill sergeant William Dietrich became battalion commander North American Aviation Co., Incorporated doing aerial photography surveys across Southern California surveying everything from missions airstrips airfields airports landing strips docks warehouses etc.; he later transferred his operations to Sylmar Air Park east side Ventura Blvd Sylmar CA 91373 then renamed it NACA Santa Ana Airport 1942-1945 It is now know as Edwards AFB

The city is named after Japanese American War veteran and educator Azusa Suzuki. It was founded in 1887 by Japanese Americans who had been relocated from their farmsteads in Pasadena and Santa Monica to populate what is now Azusa Canyon. The first school in Azusa was makeshift and taught by parents with children they were able to borrow from local families. In 1906, the first high school opened its doors to students from all over Southern California when it became part of the Pomona-based Pomona-San Bernardino Teachers College system. In 1925, Azusa High School became an independent institution and remained so until 1969 when it rejoined the Pomona-San Bernardino Teachers College system again as a community college district serving both campuses. A wide variety of businesses have been established within the city limits over time including restaurants, retail stores, banks, health care organizations and more; many of which continue to operate today. Some notable landmarks include: Mission Park (home to azusahighschool), Pacific Park (home to azusacanyonpark), downtown Azusa (including the old Main Street Terminal Complex) and Kujo Plaza (. Additionally there are several universities located within or adjacent to the city limits including Claremont McKenna College on Highway 101 north of town and University of Caltech on Hillhurst Avenue south of town). Azusa has always been an important cultural center for its large number of Japanese Americans who were educated here during World War II under various auspices including UCLA Extension School (now known as UCLA Bruins), Naval Air Station Miramar (now Joint Base Los Angeles – Chino) and other institutions like East Valley Community College near downtown where numerous famous Japs were also born or raised such as Yoshio Nakamura and Minoru Murata. Many well-known Kazuo Ishiguro wrote his Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Bell Jar" while living in nearby Palos Verdes Peninsula during his childhood years before moving back home to Japan at age 10 following the end of World War II.
