The Azusa Naval Air Station (ANAS) is the home of Naval Air Force's flying branch, the Marine Corps' Aerial Refueling Wing and the Navy's only installation for a combined helicopter and fixed-wing squadron. It was established on 24 January 1941 by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto as an airbase to support landings in China during World War II. The station played an important role in providing aviation resources for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy in 1944. In 1951, ANAS became a naval air base with radar coverage over much of southern California. The following year it became an operational fighter base with F-86 Sabres. From 1966 to 1969, ANAS served as the homeport for Helicopter Squadron Two (HS2), which was later redesignated Helicopter Squadron One (HS1). On 10 October 1969 HS1 transferred from ANAS to Vandenberg AFB, California.
